Hello, we will be traveling from Lago Maggiore (Stresa) to Zermat in late June. I think I can get there by train? But I’m having trouble figuring out which countries train system to look at do I have to buy two separate tickets or can I buy one through one site. In any event, any advice would be helpful thank you!
You can use www,sbb.ch/en for the route. Expect delays as the is track work in Italy and there may be a replacement bus required. You do not say where on Lake Maggiore you will be starting from. If from Locarno, then the Centovalli railway to Domodossola is the way to go.
Thank you! We will be in Stressa.
When inquiring about train travel it helps to be more specific then "late June".
Anyway, the line will be closed because of engineering works, and there will be a substitute bus service, and the details of that service are actually not completely known yet. But you will be able to find out the details closer to your travel date.
And yes. normally the SBB site could sell you the whole ticket. Otherwise have a look at www.trenord.it for the part till Domodossola, and www.sbb.ch for the part from Domodossola till Zermatt.
I guess that brings up the question: How are you getting to Stresa? Since there is engineering work on the rail line between Milan and Domodossola, there will only be replacement bus service between Milan and Stresa as well. There is the Alibus service that goes between Malpensa airport and Stresa as well.
