Travel between Tropea and Naples

We are leaving Tropea to Naples to catch flight to London. We will have a rental car. What would be best. Ditch our car (where?)and train to Naples or drive to Naples.? We will have overnight in Naples before our flight. Any recommendations? Thanks for your suggestions in advance. Sherry

I would say ditch it before Naples as it's friggin crazy driving there but not sure if you'll have a place to do that in Tropea. If you can get fairly close to Naples and find a drop off, then train it, then that might be better.

You have a way with words, Ron. as it's friggin crazy driving there I try to say the same thing and it comes out all understated. Thanks for hitting the nail on the head. I would extend your comment to the whole area around Napoli, especially to the south.

If you can, drop off the car in Sorrento or Salerno, then take the train (or Circumvesuviana if Sorrento) to Naples. Where will you pick up the car? Sometimes dropoff charges in another city will be considerable.

Thanks Nigel! I would use another word beginning with F to describe it but wanted to keep it clean! We actually didn't drive through Naples but just the outskirts like you say.....just as bad as Palermo...which I did drive through. FUN FUN FUN!

Thanks for all of your helpful and humorous replies. You have all confirmed what we suspected. To give you the full picture, we (4 adults)will have had the rental car for touring Umbria and southern Italy 2-3 weeks before 2 of us return to Naples. The other 2 are training (maybe driving via ferry) ) to Sicily. So we are checking into car rental options and costs and trying to decide what are our best options. @Zoe, Salerno sounds good for drop off if it will work for rental company and isn't all lot more costly. Any further suggestions are very welcome. Ciao, Sherry

Drive to Naples, get a dose of extra patience and attentions and you will be fine. No need to drop off your car elsewhere. People grossly overstate "driving in Italian big cities" challenge, as if it were Africa. Believe me, I've lived in Italy for a long time and driven, without any incident or accident, in all the "dreadful traffic" cities of PAlermo, Catania, Reggio Calabria, Roma, Napoli and Genova. If you are still worried, drop your car at Napoli airport.
