I'm trying to plan an alpine tour similar to, but still different from the Rick Steves' MyWay tour. My question is what is the best way to travel from Bolzano, Italy and Fussen, Germany. It looks like the train option will have to go to Munich, then back to Fussen. Would a bus be more direct, should I rent a car for that day, or is the train my best option?
The itinerary by car is much shorter, but still around 3 hours. By train: the route through Munich would be the easiest, about 6 hours. I see bahn.hafas.de routes you mainly through Innsbruck-Garmisch-Reutte and then a bus leg, still in the 6/7 hours range and much easier to get lost in a transfer.
Are you contemplating Neuschwanstein as a day trip from Bozen?
Too far.
I went to Bolzano from Innsbruck, wonderful train ride! About 2 hours from Innsbruck to Bolzano, a spectacular train ride.
I see that you can get to Innsbruck from Munich, 1 hour 45 minutes.
