I leave for Rome Sunday! YEAH! I have not purchased any of my rail tickets and was planning to get them when I get to Rome. Seems like a travel agent might be the way to go. (Keep in mind I speak 5 words of Italian) So has anyone used a TA in Rome for this? Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Carol, As you'll most likely be passing through Roma Termini on your way from the airport, buying tickets there would be the easiest option (IMHO). You can purchase tickets either at the staffed ticket windows (there's usually a queue) or from the automated Kiosks (which have an English language menu - credit card required). You might want to research each of your rail trips on the Trenitalia website, so that you have an idea of the departure times and which train(s) will be most convenient. Have a look at This Excellent Website for lots of great information on travelling in Italy. I'd recommend packing along a copy of the Italy Guidebook, as there's an enormous amount of information there that will help with sightseeing, transportation, etc. If you have a Kindle or other compatible Reader, you can download the book in a few minutes (or check larger bookstores in your area for the paper version). The Italy Phrasebook might be helpful also. Happy travels!
You can buy train tickets at any travel agency that displays the trenitalia logo. they are not supposed to charge a fee for this so you might want to go in with a list of tickets you wish to purchase. You can also just stop into the termini station and buy all your tickets. If you know the routes and the times you can just use the kiosks and buy them all at the same time. It will save you some time and maybe some money if you can get the mini fares. Donna
Thanks! I have some ideas of what we want, but we are flexible on times if it gets us a cheaper fare :) That's one of the reasons I was leaning towards a TA. Actually we are taking a car service from the airport to the hotel. I am traveling with my mother who is in her mid 70s and she has decided that the 'budget' option after a flight is no longer doable! :) So the first time we would be in a train station is when we plan to head down to Sorrento a few days later.
I'm going to jump ahead on Ken's suggested website a bit and take you to a specific page (although I heartily recommend reading as much as possible on that wonderful blog)... http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/buying-train-tickets-updated
I never buy my tickets ahead of time. I get to the station, buy the tickets, get on the train and head to my destination. I have never made a reservation or pre-purchased my tickets. This is a question that keeps coming up again and again. Just find one of those ATM looking machines, click the English flag and follow the instructions. I've had trouble using AMEX card, but never using Visa or MC. No Italian, no worries, the more fun trying to communicate. The only time I use the TA is to find a tour, walking tour or a hotel room for a night.
The reason I want to "pre purchase" is that I can get the Mini fares which are CHEAPER then the walk up and get on the train fares (and we are doing several long highspeed trips) Thanks everyone I have read the pages etc... I really just wanted a TA recommendation, but I am sure I will find one in Rome! Leaving today! YEAH!
Not sure what train you are using but some require you validate before getting on train or pay hefty fine. The validation machine is just as you get to the tracks.
