Travel Afficionadi please respond

As air tickets for fall of 2012 seem to be at a high, I would like to solicit other viewpoints. What would be wrong with booking accommodations now, for first choice accommodations, and take the risk of finding reasonable air rates closer to departure? I realize the rate could go up as well but I would like to hear from others.

As far as air fares, not even the airlines can predict what their prices will be several months from now. There are too many factors involved, such as oil prices, competitors' pricing, etc. So my philosophy has always been that, once I know my travel dates, I just find the best prices and go ahead and book. Then I quit thinking about it. I figure that prices will go up and down, but the number of available seats on my travel dates will always go down. And it's unlikely that prices will change by any huge amount.

Often, the smaller hotels and the B&Bs don't take bookings more than 3-4 months in advance. There's nothing wrong with booking accommodations in advance, but do be sure of the cancellation policy before making any commitments.

We like to rent properties, houses or apartments, so we often book them before buying tickets. I don't think there is any way to accurately predict what airfare will do so I pick a realistic price that I can live with and buy the tickets when they reach, or get near, that point.

You can often get good deals if you book rooms ahead. But often those deals are non-refundable, under ANY circumstances. Read all the fine print carefully. But other than those scenarios, you can often cancel reservations without penalty. Guessing airline rates or euro exchange rates is like playing the lottery. Don't try it. Just watch rates and book when you feel they are at a price level you can afford.

in general there is no harm in booking accommodations now, just check cancelling and change policies for some of the most popular accomodations in the most popular cities booking a year in advance is not uncommon just watch the airfares daily
I'm hoping for a drop after the holidays
