My wife and I are traveling from Venice to the Cinque Terre area ( We're staying in Levanto) on June 25th. What would be the best city to fly into and possibly catch a train to Levanto?
To fly from Venice the closest airports to Levanto are either Genoa or Pisa. Levanto would be about between both of those cities with Genoa being a few miles closer to the North, then Pisa is to the South.
Now if you can get a non-stop flight from Venice to either of those is a different story. You may have to connect in Florence or Rome. Which at that point compare the times closely for flying and see how it compares with a 5-6 hour train ride from Venice to Lenvanto
Remember when making the calculation mentioned above that the train station in Venice is right on the Grand Canal, serviced by most vaporetto boats in the city. You have to pass it to get to the bus station, and the airport (plus 20 minute walk to the terminal from the dock) is the best part of an hour by boat from most parts of Venice.
Then add the couple of hours to get checked in, security and waiting by the gate to board the aircraft, and waiting to push back. Then add the flight time, or more likely flight times, and the time to leave the destination airport and then get by train to Levanto.
I think you will almost always find the train to be faster, or at least no slower, overall.
pb,
I may not be reading your question correctly, but are you planning to fly from Venice to the Cinque Terre? If so, flying is absurd! Are you staying a few days in Venice prior to travel to the C.T.? Travel by train will be a far easier and better option, and undoubtedly cheaper.
There are two main routes from Venice to the Cinque Terre, one via Milan and one via Florence. I find the Florence route to be a bit quicker and easier, although your destination is north of the Cinque Terre so Milan may be easier.
If you could provide a bit more information about your plans, it would be easier to offer more specific suggestions.
Thanks for the advice.....It definitely makes more sense to catch a train from Venice through Milan or Florence to the Cinque Terre .
