My husband and I are getting off a 10 cruise in Trieste Italy. Staying one night in Venice. C. va al Ponte de l'Anzolo, 5309,
30122 Venezia VE, Italy
In July2024. Need advice on the best way to get to hotel from cruise port
Take the train from Trieste to Venice.
Bus service is also available, but the train is you best bet. Let us know what you decide, and we can probably give specific directions from your Venice arrival point to your hotel.
Calle Va al Ponte de l”Anzolois a street (Calle), right behind Piazza San Marco. What is the name of your hotel? I see two there on the map, and there may be others. The address you list (5309) is the sestriere address, and should read Castello 5309.
One of the hotels, Hotel Dona Palace (address San Marco 391) gives the following directions from the train station vaporetto dock:
https://www.donapalace.it/contact-us/
They have you walk right through Piazza San Marco to reach the hotel from the Giardinetta vaporetto dock, to avoid bridges. But that may or may not be the best way to reach your location, which is across a bridge from that hotel.
Maybe this is an apartment instead of a hotel? They should give you specific directions right to the address. It appears from Satellite view that there is a water taxi dock right by that bridge, and that may be the best way to reach that spot with luggage. You can find water taxis right outside the train station.
You are staying only one night in a location in the center of Venice that is not simple to get to by public transportation. Will you have a lot of luggage? Where are going after that one night? Getting from Trieste to Venice is the easy part. It is the last mile that is the kicker.
I completely agree with Sam. That location is not easy to reach, especially with luggage, and for only one night it doesn’t really make sense.
Where are you going after that one night? If you are flying home from the Venice airport, it makes the most sense to stay near Piazzale Roma for easy access to the airport. That is especially important if your flight departs in the morning.
If you are heading somewhere else by train, then stay near the train station. There are nice hotels on both sides of the Grand Canal in that area. You can drop your luggage at the hotel and enjoy exploring Venice the rest of the day without dragging luggage around.
Thank you for all the input. We are flying out of Venice airport at 12:15 pm after a one night stay in Venice. I picked the hotel based on reviews and thought that it would be good to be centrally located. We can cancel them and make another reservation. Would welcome suggestions as to where and hotel suggestions. Want to be able to see Venice. We will have 2 suitcases each so the easiest way to do that would be good
Ah, the cruise luggage. That changes things. Any form of public transport will be problematic with that much luggage. And getting to Piazzale Roma for the easy land taxi to the airport involves crossing over a large bridge over the grand Canal—-intimidating even with one small roller bag—-or taking the vaporetto one stop from the train station to Piazzale Roma, and then walking from there. And most of the hotels nearby will require crossing a smaller bridge as well.
So your simplest option would be to book a hotel with a nearby dock for a water taxi, and use that both ways. From the train station to hotel should be around 70 euro, and from there to the airport the next day is around 120 euro (I think). It appears on Satellie View that the hotel you have chosen may have a water taxi dock nearby, and if you can confirm that with the hotel that is an option. The location, very close to San Marco, is definitely central.
Or you could look for a different hotel with water taxi dock nearby. Hotel Splendid is a highly-rated place with its own water taxi dock, not far from the hotel you have chosen, but I don’t know how the price compares.

The water taxi price is fixed regardless of distance, so there is no benefit to choosing a hotel closer to the train station.
I know that looks expensive, but with that much luggage I would definitely not want to be taking the vaporetto plus the public bus from Piazzale Rome, or the Alilaguna, to the airport. I would warn against the Alilaguna in particular, as the boats heading to the airport fill up at the first few stops, and I have seen people left standing on the dock at the later stops.
The train from Trieste Centrale to Venice Santa Lucia takes between two to three and a half hours depending on which one you take.
You have to get off the ship and get your luggage and you to the train station……maybe by around 10:00…09:00 if you are very lucky on exiting the ship as early as possible.
Its about a 20 minute walk, so you will need a taxi with four suitcases, and there may be many other ship passengers lining up for taxis there too.
This means you won’t be arriving in Venice until about noon or later, and still have to get to your hotel which appears to be quite a way from the station.
You then have to be back at the airport for a 12:15 flight, which means getting to the airport by 10:00 at the very latest….leaving your hotel by 08:00 ….or a bit later if you take a private water taxi.
Is there any way you can extend your stay in Venice?
If not, I think you really do need to stay in a hotel very very close to the Santa Lucia railway station, then just walk and wander and relax in Venice to get an overview.
Not trying to put you off, but just give you the facts to make your stay in Venice as easy as possible.
Staying close to the train station as suggested above makes a lot of sense considering your lack of time and amount of luggage.
I have stayed at the Hotel Continental a short walk from the train station. Located on the Grand Canal, it has a dedicated water taxi dock if you want to take that to the airport.
I’ve also stayed at the Hotel Continental.
It’s literally a 5 minute walk from the station, with no bridges.
Loved it, as I had a room overlooking the Grand Canal.
Also, nothing like breakfast outside right on the canal.
I think it’s had a refresh, as it was closed last time I was in Venice in 2017.
That would save time on arrival, as well as one water taxi fare. So Hotel Continental looks like an excellent option, especially with a location right n the Grand Canal.
If the 2 suitcases each are too much to manage through the crowds, there are porters with carts available at the train station, but I don’t know what they charge or how reliable they are.
