Travel adapters for Southern Italy

Will the adapters that Rick Stevens sells for $1 work in Southern Italy? He only lists a Continental and a Great Britain adapter. From what I have read, northern Italy and southern Italy use different adapters. So, does Rick Steven's "Continental" adapter work in southern Italy?

If your appliance is dual voltage and ungrounded (the plug has 2 prongs), Rick's continental adapter will work throughout Italy. If it's grounded (the plug has 3 prongs), there are two different grounding adapters that are used in Italy. You can find an explanation at www.magellans.com

I will check. Not sure it is dual voltage? I know it can be used with the adapter (smaller two prong). I don't know if RS adapter is the smaller prong or larger prong adapter.

I would contact the travel store and ask. Generally the Continental plug as referred to on most other sites have the thicker prongs which will not fit.

thanks. I was told southern italy uses the smaller prongs. Not sure which adapter RS is selling.

Diane, What type of appliances are you planning to use in Southern Italy? It's extremely important that you check EACH ONE to determine the "Input Voltage" requirements. Devices that are designed for "world operation" will state 100-240 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz. The Plug Adapters sold in the Travel Store here should work fine. I've used the models sold at Magellans in various parts of Southern Italy, and they worked fine. If any of your appliances use a grounded (three pin) Plug, different Plug Adapters will be required. Italy generally uses the Type "I" shown in the Magellans catalogue. Many people use grounded Plugs with the two-pin Plug Adapters without any problems, however I prefer to use the appropriate Adapters for each appliance. Happy travels!

The only items we are charging are a camera battery charger (which I know will work with the adapter) and a blackberrry phone and ipod. I was told that the adapter with the smaller prongs is the one for Italy. I just didn't know if that is the one RS sells.

Diane, As you'll be travelling with a Blackberry, that brings up another concern. Which cellular network are you with, and is the Blackberry a quad-band GSM model? Have you checked with the CS rep's to determine what you'll be paying for data roaming charges?

First, my camera battery charger is dual voltage. I have a set of travel adapters...one Northern Europe..it has two larger prongs, and one Southern Europe with two smaller prongs. I visited an electronics store and my camera store, and they said I would need the Southern Europe (smaller prong) adapter. I did not know if the RS adapter was one with the larger prong or smaller prong, or if it works throughout Italy. I am wanting to purchase two more adapters (since we are travelling in a group with separate rooms among us). Regarding the blackberry, it is AT&T and we have already got that figured out with an international plan etc. Thanks for the info I have been receiving. I guess my only question, concern is, if the RS Continental adapter will work throughout Italy.

Diane - for your purposes Rick's continental adapter - which is small prong - will be fine. So-called large prong adapters are for heavy appliances like refrigerators and washing machines. At least that's what I've been told. I've traveled all over Calabria (Italy's toe) and Sicily and I've always used the same 'continental' adapter that I use in France, Germany, etc, and I've never had a problem. (I use the same one in northern Italy too.)

Tom is correct.....the larger prongs are appliances etc.....for your purpose the RS adapter works fine. I've used it throughout Italy.

Thanks! My only concern was, when I was looking at the RS adapter, I couldn't tell if it was the adapter with the larger or smaller prong. They are not that different in sizes.
