Will be attending opera at La Scala (8 pm on 4 May) and looking for recommendation for nice trattoria near La Scala for dinner before the opera.

You won't have much time to have a nice dinner and be ready for the opera at 8 pm, many restaurants open at 7... What you could do is have aperitivo, you pay for a drink and get a few things to eat, it's typical in Milan and starts at about 6 in most places.

A couple of years ago, we found that Café Trussardi, Piazza della Scala 5, was open early enough for us to have dinner before the performance. There is both a restaurant, which wasn't open when we needed it, and the café. The food was fine although not great, and it was fairly expensive for what it was, but with a location next to La Scala, to be expected.
