Trastevere Rome--Casa San Giuseppe-safe area?

I am wondering what the neighborhood is like here. We will want to go out on some of the night walks and I want to make sure we are in a safe are to do that. Thanks for any help.

Rome in general is very safe, especially the center. Trastevere is a popular area filled with lots of restaurants, cafes, and bars. In the evening the place is packed with tourists and Romans having an evening out, you should have no problems if you want to take a walk.

mary,

I found that area to be very safe at night, and I walked around frequently with expensive Camera gear with no problems at all. The area becomes most "lively" in the evenings, with sidewalk cafes open and lots of people. Of course, as with any city there are no guarantees.

As I recall, the Hotel closes the larger wooden doors at night, but there's an access door available.

What time of year will you be there (I'm assuming a RS tour)???

Cheers!

We stayed in that area while we were in Rome and we had no problems. Don't freak out about graffiti, Italy is full of graffiti it doesn't mean you are in a bad area. It is a lively area at night and great food. I had the best lasagna in my life in a little restaurant (white and red checkered table cloth). We were wondering around for a place to eat after all the place we wanted to go were close (August) and saw this little restaurant with outside seating (lots of locals - always and good sign) and red and white checkered tablecloths. You can never go wrong with red and white checkered tablecloths.

There is always entertainment around Santa Maria church.

Mary, We have been to Rome a number of times, but never stayed in Trastevere just walked around the area.. However, we are booked on a RS south Italy tour starting Sept 7th and they have us staying at Casa San Giuseppe, so I assume that it's a safe area and a nice hotel. I am looking forward to seeing a different part of the city. We will not hesitate to walk around the area at night.

I hope this helps you. Have a great trip! Mimi

I found the area to be perfectly safe, but one point to mention is that the gypsies were quite active around the Santa Maria in Trastevere Church. I found them to be more of an annoyance than anything. With normal precautions such as a Money Belt, you should have no problems.

Cheers!
