My wife and I are considering an apartment (Sleep in Italy) on Via Manara in the Trastevere. It seems like Manara is the dividing line between quiet neighborhoods and the area filled with late-night bars. We'd prefer a quiet and safe area at night. Your experience or comments about Via Manara? Thanks.
All of Trastevere (and all of Rome) is safe. It's the quiet part that you're right to be concerned about. Have you checked out Google Maps Streetview? They have good coverage of Trastevere. My recollection of Trastevere is that this street should be fairly quiet, especially since it doesn't open up on any piazzas. Make sure your apartment is not right above a late night restaurant or bar. (You know to expect graffiti everywhere in Rome, right?)
Michael and Todd ... thanks for your replies. Todd, was your Manara area reasonably quiet at night?
Stayed on Manara 2 weeks ago and felt safe the whole time. Had a 10-15 minute walk each morning and evening to the bus stop by the tiber river. Excellent dining options and did not feel far from the sights.
The thing to keep in mind about Rome (and most cities in Italy) is that the noise level varies a huge amount block by block and depending on whether your room's windows open onto the street or an inner courtyard.
Thank you Michael, I do understand your point. My wife and I travel extensively and tend to stay in apartments rather than hotels. You are right that with Google Maps we can get street views of our location, but even then we can never be entirely sure what the late-night noise level will be like. Example ... we had a great apartment in Barcelona last Spring, but realized too late that an art store on the ground floor sponsored late night art viewings/parties for its patrons. Not a bar, not a restaurant, but still noisy. I'm hoping that someone, maybe Todd, has personal experience with the noise vibe on the street. Thanks again.
