Trastavere Eating Europe Twilight Tour

We arrive in Rome on a Thursday in October at noon, and will proceed to our apartment in Trastavere where we will stay for four nights. Love walking food tours for the food, but also learning about the city, so plan to take the Eating Europe tour the first night to get a lay of the land and the delcious local offerings.

Surprisingly, there are many choices for the start time - almost every 20 minutes from 4pm to 6pm. Sunset is at 630 on the day we would go. The 4pm slot is already 75% full. Anyone have a suggestion for the best time to start this 4 hour tour?

Thanks!

I would probably go later. "When in Rome, do as the Romans" and the Romans tend to eat dinner later than Americans and tourists typically eat. The later you go, the more likely that the restaurants will be full of locals rather than other tourists. The northwestern half of Trastevere (northwest of Viale Trastevere) gets livelier as the night goes on, too, which is a better atmosphere.

You are coming from Sicily, right? Worth mention as advice might be against booking an arrival-day tour if coming off a trans-Atlantic flight.

I took this food tour last year, late September. Looking at my notes, the tour started at 5:15, ending 9:15 and about a 15 minute walk back to my hotel. Fun tour, interesting guide. Later is better to get the feel of the neighborhood.

Good point Kathy! Yes we are coming from Catania. So less worried about arrival woes.

We did an Eating Europe tour in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood last year. I would do it again. Choose a slightly later tour - 6-6:30 or so. Arrive hungry and ready to walk. It’s fascinating and doing it the first night you’ll see places to go back to. Take photos with the map feature enabled so you can find your way back.

I believe we also started at 5:15 pm. I really would not go later because we were in restaurants like Trattoria da Enzo before the restaurants opened to the public and had the full attention of the staff. By the time we got to the restaurant featuring pasta, everywhere was crowded and our waiter a bit busy but our guide was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed it!
