Trapani/Erice or Agrigento/Trapani for last 4 nights of fun

Hi, please give me your opinion..Planning 1 month trip to Sicily. Husband and I are well travelled including Italy, all on buses and trains. Plan to do same in Sicily. (first & only trip to Sicily/don't have to check off all the sites. Hope we have planned a balanced trip; we have 4 last days to plan --before we return to Palermo for our last 2 nights (returning to Bay Area, California). We will be coming from Palermo. Should we spend these 4 days:
in Trapani/Erice/Segesta 4 nights OR Agrigento/Cefalu/ (2 in Agrigento, 2/Cefalu)
**Or we can do 3 in Trapani, and then take bus or train to Agrigento from Trapani 1 night
Given your experience-- what would you do? They all sound good to us. Which makes more sense?

The rest of the trip--- Exploring on bus/train with base in: Fly in from 4 days in Naples......
Siracusa/Ortygia (7 nights)
Ragusa (3 nights)( including Feria de San Gregorio)
Palermo(7 nights)---- I realize we can do day trips to Agrigento and Cefalu from Palermo. We are
open to this.

Have 4 days/nights free ---- What is great way to end the trip?
Palermo (2 nights)

Tough choice. The Valley of the Temples takes at least 3 hours to see meaning probably a night in Agrigento. To me, Erice can be seen in about a half day and Trapani in a day. Cefalù deserves a day. If you plan on doing some walking up on the hill, then two days would be nice. Erice is overrun with day trippers until about 4pm and then it empties out. Most stores are closed by 5pm and restaurants by 10pm. The cable car from/to Trapani is a good way to go between the towns. The castle in Erice was underwhelming. Even though it didn’t cost much, it was too much. If you go to Cefalù there is a nice castle in Caccamo.

Palermo for 7 nights is quite a bit. I generally recommend 4. However with 7 nights you can take it easy and you should take the time for a day trip to Cefalu by train, that way you get that out of the way from your list. While in Palermo you can also spend a day at the beach in Mondello, if you are going in summer.

I liked the western side (Trapani province), but I always traveled by car, so I don't know how easy it would be to visit those places without one (Segesta, Erice, Zingaro Reserve, Scopello, Selinunte).

Agrigento can be easily reached by train from Palermo in 2 hours. Some people visit the temples on a day trip from Palermo, but if you want you can stay longer.

Thanks so much. I will see which option works out. Traveling on train and bus, we don't want to keep moving with luggage so much. This is why the 7 days..... but maybe I can shorten this and spend more time in Agrigento... 1 or 2 nights there would actually be nice.

And then take day trips to a few places (Cefalu, maybe an island)
We will do the anti-Mafia tour (goes to Corleone) --- one day. Do most of the sights on our own.

Thank you both for feedback. So helpful. We tend to spend more days in cities when we travel so we can feel more acquainted and not forget all we saw. that's why it's a one month trip. Tricky here because Sicily is different that most places...

I think you can visit Segesta from Trapani by bus. Erice is a short taxi ride from Trapani. So for both you could base in Trapani. If you care for islands you can visit the Egadi (Favignana or Levanzo) from Trapani.
I think you can easily visit the valley of the temples in 3 hours. So one night in Agrigento would be enough. Actually if you go in May-Sept, the days are long enough to visit it on a day trip from Palermo. 2.5 hours going, 2.5 coming back, and whatever you can fit in between to see the place (I think I spent 2-3 hours and was more than enough). Last train from Agrigento Centrale back to Palermo departs at 8:13pm, so you could have more than enough time to visit.

One last probe from you all----Since I wrote, decided to make a change in Sicily itinerary to:
May 13th-- May 17(4) : Napoli & exploration outside of Napoli
May 17th-19: arrive in Catania--- 2 nights free (I have reserved 2 nights in Taormina and hope I don't
regret). Don't like oversaturated tourist traps. As alternative to Taormina, someone suggested
a small town outside of Catania and I am looking at that as possibility. We have 7
nights reserved in Siracusa; 4 nights in Ragusa--- festivals and explore coastal
villages. I have heard to water is cold--- a disappointment since we like to
swim. So glad we were warned... tourist books don't talk about this! My husband
lived in Mexican Carribbean 16 years so we are used to warm water (smile)
May 19-25: Siracusa(7) & exploration of area on bus
May 25-29, : Ragusa (4), Festa Di SanGrigorio, big Day is May 28th evening, exploration of coast
towns.
May 26- June 3: (5 nights)Palermo & maybe day trip to Cefalu.
June 3-7: (4 nights) Trapani/Erice/Segesta/maybe 1 island trip... we like to chill & explore locally.
June 7-9 Free 2 nights!! SUGGESTIONS? Should we add days to Trapani area? -- Selinunte and etc
and skip Agrigenta? Or should we go to Agrigenta and spend 1 or 2 nights. Open to
suggestions--- just need to travel on train/bus. So far bus/train goes everywhere we
want.

June 9-11: Palermo.... Last 2 day in Palermo area. See whatever we missed to revisit favorite
places. Fly HOME from Palermo. Fly 11th in Evening.

We have spent 2 nights in Taormina and it is really only one day. Enjoyed the Roman arena and the big park with gardens/ overlooking Mt Etta. There is a bar a bus ride up the hill with some erotic collections and a great view of the countryside. Also a walking path down to the beach with a tram back up. Eat off the main pedestrian road. Evening passeggiata with a leasurely drink watching people was how we ended the day. Enjoy this time of day twice. Our BnB had a roof top terrace for breakfast and hanging out after dark with a great view of Mt Etna. Be sure you travel in a circle around Sicily. Don’t backtrack as the last few days seem to do. It is a small island but as you know each move takes lots of time and energy. Consider 2 nights in Agrigento if you want to see the Valley of the Temples. It is hot and crowded. Having seen all the Roman temple sites on our last trip, We got overwhelmed with them. Even though it is the biggest site, it is the one I could have skipped. Sicily was a new way to see Italy and the food was superb.

Why not go from Ragusa to Agrigento for two nights? See the Valley of Temples and Scala dei Turchi. Then on to Trapani for four nights and end in Palermo with all your nights in Palermo together. This way no backtracking.
We went to Sicily for three weeks in June 2019. We ended our trip in Palermo and did do a day trip to Mondello for a beach day. The lido's were packed and the water was crystal clear and warm like Aruba. Granted, we were there the end of the month, so a couple of weeks later, but it may not be too cold if they have warm weather.

Thank you everyone! So helpful. Looks like we decided to skip Agrigento (seeing the ruins not a must for us)...don't need to see all the ruins. I think Taormina (greek theatre, maybe Isola Bella, doing Savola & hill towns, and just hanging out. Villages, old churches, festas in Noto & Ragusa.... and wonderful architecture everywhere & enjoying all the good food. Husband comes career in culinary world so he loves the good food. We will start with trip with Taormina ( accept that its touristy but will do the Godfather Tour to Savola (we are die hard fans of the Godfather movies & Martin Scorcese). Then a 9 days in Siracusa & Ragusa (as bases). Will enjoy Festa di San Gregorio in Ragusa.... just explore too, Comiso has festa too.

Then on to Palermo for 5 nights (maybe day trip to Cefalu) and sights near it , then to Trapani/Erice/Favignana. (3 nights Favignana/ 4 nights in Trapani with side trips around the
area... Erice, Segesta, maybe a few other places pretty close. We will go home from Trapini!! Thanks for suggestion, Roberto! Don't need to return to Palermo. It's a one month trip so we can just enjoy hanging out and not running around. (Just retired and are enjoying the leisure)
