Transpostation from Positano to Siena/Bologna

What is the best way to get from Positano to Siena/Bologna/Modena area? I have looked at so many rail websites and am very confused.

Thank you,
Audrey

Hi Audrey
Where precisely are trying to travel to? Siena is really not in the same area as Bologna and Modena. : )
From Positano, you can take a bus to Sorrento , then local train to Naples, then to Siena or Bologna. A very long trip!

Depending on what time of year you are traveling, you can also take a ferry to Sorrento and then on the Naples, but will have to get transportation from the port area in Naples to the train station.

Trenitalia is the state railroad company.

You'd probably want to go on up to Bologna/Modena which is about an hour north of Florence. You can make the trip on a 'fast train' with a reservation out of Rome Termini.

Siena is most commonly visited by a bus trip from Florence. Trains coming from Florence drop you off at the north end of town, and the bus takes travelers into the city center.

Part of your confusion may stem from the fact that Positano is not on a train line. It is only accessible by bus or boat.

The bus takes you to Sorrento or Salerno (via Amalfi); the boat takes you to Sorrento, Salerno, or Naples. From Sorrento, you then can take a Circumvesuviana train to Naples; this train is not run by Trenitalia and so does not show on all websites. It runs frequently, takes 70 minutes (less if you get a "DD" train which skips some stops), and is cheap. Here is the schedule; your origin is "Sorrento" and you destination is "Napoli Garibaldi" (second to last stop): http://www.eavcampania.it/web/sites/default/files/ftp_orari_ferroviario/Cy.pdf

From Naples or from Salerno, you take Trenitalia to Siena, Bologna, or Modena. To Siena or Modena, you will definitely have to change at least once; for Bologna, there will be some direct trains from Naples, but others will require changes.

Note that the boats from Positano are seasonal. Once they stop running, bus is your only option.

Unfortunately, the trip will take some time no matter how you do it; there is no "fast" or "easy" way.
