Transporting rental car on ferry from Olbia to Citavecchia

Hi, we are planning our trip to Italy in June and our first stop is Sardinia, followed by Umbria. We arrive in Milan and then take a flight to Sardinia where we are going to pick up a rental car.

I don’t know if it’s better to return the rental car in Sardinia, return to Milan, pick up a new rental car there and then drive the 5 hours to Umbria OR if it’s better to scrap the return flight to Milan and instead take the ferry with the rental car from Olbia, Sardinia to Citavecchia (mainland Italy) and then drive 1.5 hours to our agriturismo in Umbria.

At first blush, the latter seems easier but never having taken a ferry in Italy and speaking almost no Italian (although my Spanish may get us by), I don’t know how complicated it would be. I think I may have read somewhere that taking a rental car on a ferry can complicate matters but I’m not sure.

Would appreciate it if someone with experience could chime in.

Thank you

Leave the car in Sardinia. Are you interested in the drive between Milan and Umbria? Because Rome is closer. You could fly Milan - Olbia - Rome, pick up second car at Rome airport. There are several inexpensive domestic airlines (check Ryanair and Volotea) between Sardinia and mainland Italy (just be sure to pick the ticket that allows the luggage you have)

I never even thought about flying from Sardinia to Rome but that makes sense. I’m not particularly interested in the drive from Milan to Umbria but we had already bought round trip tickets from Milan to Alghero and back to Milan. I suppose we could scrap the return flight from Alghero to Milan and instead just buy a one-way ticket to Rome and pick up a rental car from there. I’m a little intimidated driving in Rome but I suppose it wouldn’t be any worse than trying to drive out of Milan to Umbria.
