My husband and I are arriving in Rome on May 10th. We are staying a week and then going to Florence for 3 nights and then going to Innsbruck Austria. My questions are: We want to go to Assisi for a day, I cannot find train times that are good from Rome to Assisi. Am I missing something? Is it a lot better to do it from Florence? When looking for trains from Florence to Innsbruck, I have had to search in segments or I get a message that they cannot find tickets. What will be the best and most scenic route? I would like to leave Florence around 9 am and arrive in Innsbruck with some daylight left. This will be on May 20th. Thanks for all help
That schedule is up on trenitalia now. There are no high speed trains and trains are not frequent whether you travel from Rome or Florence. HOWEVER!!!! The trip is worth it in so many ways. Assisi is a very special place. Try to plan it so you are there in the evening. Don't book the last train out since it sometimes just doesn't happen.
Sorry, can't help you with Innsbruck. Haven't done that . . . yet.
As with your France question, I would start with the DB link at Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online as the easiest way to find train schedules across Europe.
Rail Europe's shopping cart sometimes cannot book multiple connections at once but would book them in pieces. But I also (while typing this response!) just looked up a May 14 Salzburg-Rome direct night train ticket for someone else and Rail Europe does not currently have that available online, either. So that speaks to a system issue they must be working on and you'd have to try back in a few days, use the contact system that they display, or book through another source.
I am seeing at least one train every hour, sometimes half hour from Florence to Innsbruck. If you are searching for direct trains, there aren't any. You will need to make at least 1 or 2 connections.
For Rome to Assisi, what do you consider a good time? I see a direct train at 7:58 that takes 2 hours and 9 minutes. Direct returns at 4:24 pm and 6:27 pm taking a little more than 2 hours. These are direct Regionale trains, and may not show up on Raileurope because they are cheap and Raileurope can't make any money on them.
Thanks
Robert, What should we experience in the evening?
