Transportation within Rome

I am flying into the Leonardo da vinci airport. My hotel is close to the Roma termini train station (close to the colosseum) What is recommended for best to get to the hotel? I am trying to the cheapest options. I am worried the language is going to make all this difficult. It is my first time traveling to Italy alone.

The Leonardo Express train is the best option for you. Takes you right to Termini. Costs 14 euros. Sounds like you could use a decent guidebook. I highly recommend Rick's book on Italy.

I highly doubt language is going to be a huge barrier. Europeans are my linguistic heroes...most speak at least 2 or 3 or even 5 different languages. Some even more.

Luckily most signs in the airport also have "pictures" to go with them for trains, or toilette, or tickets - I think you will be fine.

Nothing could be easier than buying train tickets in Italy. The machines work flawlessly and have an English option. They also have live ticket agents in the station for the express train from the airport.

Once you get to Termini ststion, you can take a taxi to your hotel, or take a taxi directly from the airport to your hotel for a flat fee, I think about €45-48.

Just remember that the English option on ticket machines is shown by the British flag, so don't try looking vainly for stars-and-stripes. Or sometimes it says "English"

You may also take an express shuttle bus: a good option if watching your pennies. They take a little longer but are air-conditioned, safe and comfortable: like touring coaches rather than city buses. Tickets are easily purchased outside of baggage at Fiumicino, and I'd say either SIT or Terravision. Tickets are between 4-6 euro or so.

The Leonardo express is very easy to take from the airport. There are only two tracks, signage to the trains is clear, and they leave frequently. There are ticket machines and a manned booth. Or if lines are long, you can go to the Tabbachi shop and get a ticket along with a bottle of water. This is usually my move if I have just gone to the ATM. I see it as an immediate opportunity to get small bills.

As Zoe said, taxis are plentiful at Termini just make sure you go to the main stand at the front of the station: it will be easy, you will see a long row of taxis and frequently a line of people waiting.

If your hotel is close, you can always walk from the train station. But if it's closer to the colosseum that would be a long walk with luggage (but downhill!). In these situations. I will map it out on google maps and then screen shot the map and the written directions. Just be sure you pick the "walking" and not the driving option. This is assuming you bring a smart phone which I like to do. If you get turned around, there are many hotels in the area. They are generally very helpful and willing to help a lost tourist.
