We disembark a ship on 4/29 and have three days to spend in Italy. For this trip we would like to go to Volterra. I've checked the train connections for Volterra-Saline-Pomarance but then I still need a bus to get to Volterra. Is it better to train to Pisa and pick up a bus to Volterra from there? More importantly, need a reliable transportation plan to get from Volterra to FCO Wed night for early flight Th. Your suggestions please! I'd like to have more time for actual exploring than transporting. Thanks!
I suspect the Saline to Volterra buses are somewhat timed to meet the trains. If no one here knows for sure, your Volterra hotel could probably help. Going to Pisa is a bit out of the way. If you choose that option, you'd be better off going on to Pontedera by train and catching bus #500 from there to Volterra. The local bus from Pisa to Pontedera is very slow. Avoid bus #500 departing around 1:00-1:30 Mon-Sat, as it's packed with rowdy school students who take all the seats. Best option to return to Rome may be bus from Volterra to Florence (easy change to a different bus line in Colle Val d'Elsa) and then a high-speed train back to Rome.
