Kathy: I had a lot of fun using Google Maps and plotting routes on foot and by public transportation. The public transportation is less precise, but the TI (Tourist Info) in each coty can help you a lot.
Kathy,
We picked up a tourist map of the city and walked everywhere. The map shows the metro line and stops, as well a the bus line in blue. The cost for the Metro is 1 euro, it is good for 75 minutes, you can get off and on to to some other sites.

Your hotel is on the Via Veneto. You can either go to the piazza Barberini at one end of the Via Veneto or you can go to the spanish steps stop to catch the metro. Take it to the ottaviano stop. From there the vatican museums is just a block or two away. The ticket fo rthe metro will cost 1 euros and you can get it at the newsstand next to the metro stop in the piazza barberini.

Or you can turn right out of your hotel, walk through the Aurelian Walls to the S. Paulo Braslile bus stop (150 yards). The 490 bus will take you down the hill where you can catch the metro as outlined by Donna at the Flaminio station... or you can stay on the 490 bus and it runs right to the Cipro metro where you can then walk to the Vatican. I think there are pictures on this link of the Cipro metro path!
