My family of four is considering a side trip to Sardinia next May during a month-long trip to Italy. I'm wondering what the most economical way to travel is from the mainland. It appears it would be by ferry, but I'm having trouble interpreting the ferry tables. Can anyone recommend which ferry company they have used and give me any ideas about cost? Thanks so much!
Try here for Ferries: http://www.aferry.to/ Ferry companies are probably limited, only one or two serving a port, so if the route and schedule work, go with it.
You probably can not yet get firm info for next May, but a quick check, booking next month showed deck passage for less than 50 euro each way. Of course, if you move up to a cabin, it will be much more. You may also consider flying. I usually start with a site like www.whichbudget.com to find out what airlines fly a route. A quick check showed Ryanair, Blu-express and Meridiana-Eurofly all flying from Rome to Sardinia.
If you're traveling during the day, rather than at night, is there a huge advantage to having a cabin? If you only reserve a seat, is there a place to check your luggage?
Of the ferries I have been on, there is always someplace to store luggage, maybe not a secure/locked bin, but at least a rack, much like a train. For day travel, and relatively short (6 hrs or less) a cabin is an unecessary expense.
