In September, we(my sister, my mother (age 83) and myself) cruise into Civitavecchia. What is the best way to get into Rome, for 4-6 hours, cheaply, safely, and reliably. thank you!
There is a train station within a quarter mile of the port. You will need to hop a cab to the train from the port, due to the age of your mother (we walked it but were much younger). From there a simple train ride to Termini. A bus will take you from the boat to an unloading area, from there just grab a cab, there all over the place. Enjoy and have fun.
Linda's information is basically correct but a small caution. When a ship docks it can be very difficult to get a cab to take you to the Civit... train stations because it is only a mile and the cab driver wants the bigger fare of a cab to Rome or the air port if someone are departing or more than one ship in port. There is also a bus that circulates between the station and the port entrance. It was 1 Euro last summer. That may be your better bet if the demand for cabs is high. There are three trains an hour and take between 45 min and 1 hr 15 depending on the number of stops. The train cost last summer for 2nd class was 3 Euros and it dead ends in Rome so you didn't have to worry about getting off at the right station.
Thank you so much. This was really helpful!
