Transportation to Rome (FCO) airport New Years Day

We are planning our first trip to Europe and will be in Rome for New Years Eve with our return flight to the US New Years day. Will there be difficulties finding public transportation to the airport New Years day? Our flight leaves at 10:30AM. Thank you in advance for any advice!

All of the public transportation will be on holiday schedule. If you have a 10:30 AM flight directly to the US on a US-flagged carrier, you'll have to head to Terminal 5 at FCO. You need to be there about 3 hours in advance - especially on a holiday when things tend to move even slower...it that's possible! As Frank says, the first Leonardo Express leaves about 05:52 from Roma Termini, and takes 31 minutes, so this can work for you. (The LE does NOT have a holiday schedlule!) The The FR1 Metropolitan can also get you there in time. If you have to use public transportation - like the bus or metro to get to a train station - then you''ll have to make adjustments to be earlier due to the holiday scheduling. Taxis will be operating as will private shuttles. I've arrived and departed from FCO on New Year's Day a few times (mostly heading to other parts of Europe, not the USA). The airport was less hectic, but there were fewer desk personnel working and fewer security stations operating. We are there usually quite early - far earlier than you will be - as we were catching the highly discounted early flights. As chaos tends to BUILD at FCO, I'm sure it's a little more hectic later in the day. Rule of thumb on a holiday at FCO - give yourself plenty of time to get there and get through check-in and security.

Heather, this post on the Leonardo Express might give you some more assistance. I'ts packed with photos of the train: Riding the Leonardo Express . That's a wonderful time to be in Rome with all the lights and festivites. Head to Piazza del Popolo about 22:00 on NYE for an incredibly disorganized (and sometimes dangerous) fireworks display by the locals. See this article for pictures!
