We are stopping in Naples on our cruise next spring from 7 am to 6 pm. I looked at the dedicated bus that starts at the port to Pompei listed in Rick’s book but it has a set return time that only allows about 3 hours at the site. We want to do a 3 hour tour by walks of Italy and stay longer on our own. The local train sounds pretty rough. Does anyone have personal experience using the bus, train or taxi? How expensive is a taxi back to the port if we take the bus to the site from the port? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help

The Circumvesuvian is like any other metro or the L in Chicago. It’s about 2 blocks from the Pompeii Scavi entrance. Just be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be fine. I’ve used it many times in the past 15 years, never a problem. 75 year old woman.

You'll need to allow lots of time for that trip. You'll first have to get from the cruise ship dock to Napoli Garibaldi station if you're going to use the Circumvesuviana train. It's very inexpensive but it a bit "rough around the edges" with a reputation for pickpockets.
The cruise ship terminal may be busy first thing in the morning as your fellow passengers disembark either for bus tours operated by the cruise lines, or self guided tours using a taxi or whatever. Given the rigid time limits, you might consider using a private car service to take you right to Pompeii, as that will provide you with the maximum amount of time at the site with minimal travel time.
You might have a look at the RS Italy guidebook as they have suggestions for reliable car services and also for excellent Pompeii tour guides. I've toured in that area with both Gaetano Manfredi and Pina Esposito, and both were outstanding!!!

You could also take the Campania Express, which is just for tourists, slightly more expensive than the Circumvesuviana, and less crowded.
