the train runs through the five Cinque Terre villages, up through Genoa and on to Milan. you generally have to make one train change, either in Monteroso or later, maybe in levanto. You can see the schedules at Trenitalia.com.

Joe, as the previous post indicated, the best method of transportation to the Cinque Terre is via train. You'll go through either Genoa or La Spezia to reach the five villages. The route will depend on which train you choose. For example, the journey from Milan to Riomaggiore (the most southerly village) is about 3.5 to 4-hours, with a change in either La Spezia or Genoa. At least one change is usual, as you'll need to transfer to the local train. Reservations are often compulsory on the trains from Milan, but never on the local train. If you're buying P-P tickets in Milan, reservations will be included in the cost. Do you know yet which of the villages you'll be staying in? Cheers!
