We're searching for an affordable hotel in the Rialto bridge area for 1 night before and after the cruise that is also near the cruise ship port.

Marie - Nothing is really cheap in Venice - At Rialto Bridge , One of the nicest Hotels in Venice is The Rialto Bridge Hotel - Great location BUT expensive.
I would suggest The Hotel Casanova, directly behind The Piazza San Marco and close to everything. A 5 minute walk to the Rialto area with all it's markets, close to The Grand canal with it's views and vendors. The "Battle of the Bands" at night is a whole lot of fun in the Square.
As far as getting to the ship inexpensively, from the Casanova it is a brief walk down to the water, jump on the Vaporetto, and get off at the terminal area.
