Transportation Tips for Varenna to Lucerne

We will be spending a few days in Varenna prior to leaving on the RS "Best of Switzerland" tour which begins in Lucerne in September. There seems to be many routes to travel, some of them quite complicated. We will not have a car, but are open to hiring a driver for a portion of the travel or taking trains. Would anyone have advice on a scenic, but not too cumbersome way to travel to Lucerne? Thank you in advance.

Varenna to Milano Centrale and then the direct train to Lucerne.

Least complicated or cumbersome? Take a train from Varenna-Esino to Monza at 8:35 am. Change to an EC train to Luzern. Takes 5 hours.

That route is not complicated or cumbersome, nor very scenic as it uses the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest underground train tunnel in the world at over 35 miles, burrowing completely under the Alps.

More scenic, while not too complicated or cumbersome is to take the train at 8:35 am to Monza, change to a regional train to Cadenazza, change to an IR train to Luzern, mostly over the Alps. Takes 6 hours.

Thank you! The scenic route seems like a great suggestion.
