Transportation Time from Termini to FCO

Family of five will be flying from FCO to Gatwick on a Thursday afternoon/evening at 6:30pm. What time should we plan to arrive at FCO? 4:30? 5? We could take the train to eliminate traffic concerns, but would be easier and more economic to take a taxi. What is the longest it could potentially take with traffic at that hour? An hour?

I suggest you pre-book a driver (perhaps through Rome Cabs, much recommended here) and let them tell you. I would allow at least an hour for the trip by taxi, but a professional would know the traffic better. I would be there at least 2 hours before the flight.

We have booked Rome Chauffer (Rome Cabs did not have availability) from FCO to our apartment but time won't be a concern on the way in. I will inquire with the driver then.

Travel Man - I thought it was 15 euro/pp? If so, the train won't save us money - it would be a lot more. Hence, why I'm asking my question.

This is from my host in Rome for an upcoming trip, and it is for traveling from the airport to Termini, but it should be similar to what you are doing:

time to get Termini station is different if you take a taxi (50 minutes, 48€) , a bus (55 minutes every 20 minutes, 5€) or a train (leonardo express 40 minutes, every 30 minutes- 12€)

What does your airline recommend?

Since you are going to a non-Schengen country, you will need to do all the passport processing formalities.

2 hours may be enough.but not my comfort zone.

At that time of day, I would be there by 3.30, 4pm at the latest since the lines at security and check-in can be long and slow. Also you will need to clear exit immigration and that is another unpredictable line. While the train would not be cheaper I would take because of potential traffic issues. Several years our son was caught a huge traffic delay caused by an accident on the road to the airport. They were just about ready to shut the door when he got to his plane. The fixed rate mentioned earlier for the taxi is only for four and luggage. Don't know if a fifth person would be allowed. If you have to take two taxis it is no longer cheaper. Finally I might consider going as early as 2 pm and having dinner in the airport prior to departure.

Make sure the cab is big enough for 5. Most can only take 4 plus driver. We have had to take 2 cabs.

Thank you all. I have all the same concerns about finding a taxi for 5. Might just go ahead and book a car or decide on Leonardo Express to guarantee an arrival time at FCO. Airline isn't specific on time you should arrive - just says leave plenty of time. Gee, thanks! We will get there 2+ hours before to be safe.
