We are in Venice now and the vaporetto stops all have notices posted about the strike on Friday.

Usually those 24 hour rail strikes happen starting at 9 pm on Saturday evening, not Friday evening. I wonder what makes this one different? (I double-checked Rik's info at http://www.mit.gov.it/mit/site.php?p=scioperi because I found this so strange. Not surprisingly, Rik is right.)

Darn, I wish I had read this sooner. We got stuck in Lucca last night. We were waiting for the 2130 train to Florence that never showed up so we thought we had to wait for the 2230 train. Luckily, an English speaking Trenitalia agent told us about about the strike and helped us figure out how to get back. We took the last train out of Lucca to Pistoia and cabbed it to Florence. We're €65 poorer but at least we got back to our apt. And now I have a train strike story to tell.

We are experiencing the same in the SF Bay Area.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains are on strike since midnight last night. I don't recommend trying to get to SF until it's over. Traffic on the bridges isn't pretty.
