Transportation-Rome to Sorrento

Due to MANY cancellations of our flight home to NYC from Naples this April vacation, we have had to switch our air departure to Rome rather than Naples.
How would you manage transportation needs?

Leave Rome Wednesday morning for Pompeii and Sorrento(hotel)
Fly out of Rome at 2:50 pm on Saturday.

Should we rent a car for Wed-Saturday (not my first choice)
Can we do all our transport via train?
Do we do a mix of train travel and private driver?

We were quoted $690 for a driver to take us from Sorrento to Rome Airport on Saturday.
Seems like the least stressful but an unnecessary expense.

We are 2 adults and 1 teen

You can take the high-speed train from Rome to Naples and then the local train to Sorrento (and Pompeii). Once in Sorrento the rest of the Amalfi Coast and Capri are reachable by bus or ferry. I would highly recommend that you NOT drive the Almalfi Coast Road, particularly if you actually want to see anything. Personally, I wouldn't pay a driver $690 for the ride but that is your choice. Since your flight leaves on Saturday at 2:50 you will need to be at the airport no later than 1:00 and taking the local then high-speed train to Rome then the train to the airport is time consuming. Perhaps you should consider spending Friday night in Rome.

$ 690 one way? Are you sure it's not return? It seems quite expensive.

To give you an idea, the fixed fare for metered cabs based in Naples is € 360, one way, to Rome Fiumicino airport. Who's asking you twice only because you are departing from Sorrento and you have booked in advance? I'm positive You can get a better quote directly contacting any Sorrento driver.

You can save both money and time by hiring a driver to Napoli Afragola station, where you can take an high speed train to Roma Termini.

We've done this twice and it was very easy - do as the others suggested. High speed train from Rome to Naples, then regional train Naples to Sorrento. Once, we took the high speed train from Rome to Naples, then hired a private driver from Naples to Sorrento. Going from Naples to Sorrento via private driver was ok - but on the return from Sorrento to Naples - the TRAFFIC was terrible and it took us over two hours - I think the regional trains are the best bet.

It is impossible to wake up on the Amalfi Coast and fly out of Rome the same day. Since Sorrento is not as far as the AC, it is simply "unwise" to wake up in Sorrento and fly out of Rome the same day. You are playing with fire.

It's not entirely fair to read between the lines, but it appears that you don't have much European travel experience, or public transportation experience. I mean, for example, that you should have, by now, gone to https://www.trenitalia.com/en/frecce/frecciarossa.html , clicked on the English button, and started to explore the connections between Rome and Sorrento. Have you learned how to get between FCO and the downtown Rome train stations?

Please don't think I'm yelling at you. If you are arranging your own travel, i.e. not using a bricks, mortar, and flesh Travel Agent, you MUST learn to do these things. You cannot plan a multi $1,000 trip using only advice from a newsboard. (I mean, for example, if you miss your fast (Frecciarossa) train from Rome, you need to know that you cannot use a reduced-fare ticket on the next train. You have to learn about the various fares, and their flexibilities, just like you do about your air tickets.

Even more important, you have to learn that the train you get on in Rome cannot go all the way to Sorrento. You have to weigh the cost of the four or five ways to get from Naples to Sorrento, against the time and comfort issues.

I am using a travel agent but I figured I could follow up on this site.
Given the travel issues, we had no plan on flying out of Rome. This was made necessary due to the airlines cancelling Naples flights.
Please don't scold. I have been trying to get this trip off the ground since Covid cancelled it in April of 2020.

Cindy, however you choose to do it, I'll throw my hat with others strongly recommending that you stay in Rome the night before your flight. Having been caught in a few transport snags in Europe, it was fortunate that none of them involved having to make a flight on time. Some snags can involve rail but road travel can have its own pitfalls, as chinalake has pointed out. Sorrento is juuuuust far enough away from FCO for concern.

Being closer to Fiumicino will take some stress off on your day of departure. Sounds like a little less stress would be welcome right now? 😉

You must be in Rome the night before your departure
No question

You will need to be at FCO by 11:50. Airlines recommend 3 hours preflight

You can take fast train to and from Rome/Naples
Once at Napoli Centrale you have choices to get to Sorrento
The Circumvesuviana train, the Campania Express (if timing works and it is running -it is seasonal)
OR
private driver to pick you up and drive you to your hotel in Sorrento.
Reverse that for your trip back to Rome

We used this company to pick us up at station.
It was 90 euros to Sorrento

If your budget allows that’s what I would recommend
Fast train to/from Naples with a driver to/from Sorrento

If you want to train the whole way here are links to Circumvesuviana and Campania Express
https://www.positano.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule?timetable_route=sorrento_napoli

https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/campania-express-train-schedule

Fast train options:
https://www.trenitalia.com/content/tcom/en.html

https://www.italotreno.it/en

You do not want or need a car in Sorrento/Amalfi
It would be nothing more than an expensive headache.

Don’t forget to allow time on Friday for your COVID test

ETA
Just noticed “home” is NYC
if you’ve ridden the subway in NYC then the Circumvesuviana will be no problem for you

Is it possible to re-arrange your travels to swap your time blocks for Sorrento and Rome, such that you do Sorrento earlier in the trip and finish in Rome?

Otherwise, at the risk of being flagged for 'piling on' trying to travel from Sorrento to FCO on the day of flight is on par with Evel Knievel jumping a a canyon.

Sleep in Rome the night before the flight.

It is impossible to wake up on the Amalfi Coast and fly out of Rome the same day

If you wake up before 6:30 AM and hire a reputable driver it's quite possible. Some guy who will take you from the door of your hotel to the Departures at FCO.

Unfortunately It's also expensive and inconvenient to do so, but thousands of locals do it. Neapolitans flying to the US do not spend the night before in Rome. The main difference between locals and tourists is that locals can ask some cousin for a ride to the airport and save € 300!
