Transportation recommendations Venice to Monterosso

Hello,
My wife and I are traveling in September and are a little confused by the different transportation options available. We’re fairly certain we don’t want to rent a car. We’d like to travel by train, private transport or even bus if necessary. We have the apps for Rome2Rio and Trenitalia but are a little confused. Here are the dates and our destinations if you can suggest best transportation options. Thank you for your help!

Sep 10 travel from Venice to Monterosso

Sep 14 travel from Monterosso to Siena

Sep 16 travel from Siena to Sorrento

Sep 21 travel from Sorrento to Rome

"Best" means something different to each reader. Do you mean cheaper, faster, more comfortable , less changes? What is your transportation style? What is your level of comfort/ discomfort?

Our recent experiences-
We traveled from Sorrento to the Rome airport this past May. The Sorrento/ Amalfi area is extremely congested with few efficient transportation modes, either public or private. We used Aldo Limos, which took about 3.5 hrs, in a private car, cost about 500 Euros ( altho we bundled this with some other services from Aldo, for additional cost.) In a private car, it took an hour just to get out of Sorrento, due to the ever- present traffic congestion. We do highly recommend Aldo Limos.

Mondo tours offers some shared van services for transport thru the area , in addition to shared tours.

There is a crowded SRO regional train to Naples, where you can catch a high speed train to Rome Termini.

Which reflects your style and/ or budget?
Safe travels!

You should do all of these by train, and I wouldn't personally trust Rome2rio as a resource.

Trenitalia is Italy's national rail service, and you will need to use their trains for almost all of your journeys.

https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Venice to Monterosso will be a long haul.
If you are staying on the island of Venice, you will be departing from Venezia S. Lucia station
You will arrive at Monterosso station.
It will take 5.5 hours to 7+ hours, and involve at least 2 trains changes depending on which trains you choose.

Monterosso to Siena will take at least 3.5 hours and involve at least 2 train changes.

Siena to Sorrento will be another really long haul: at least 5 hours and at least one train change to Napoli Centrale, and either local Circumvesuviana commuter train or ferry (you would have to transfer to the port) to Sorrento. Add at least another 90 minutes. You could also purchase a private driver from Naples if budget allows (at least 100 euro).

Sorrento to Rome will be either ferry to Naples, transfer to Napoli Centrale and fast train to Roma Termini, or cheap (but not very comfortable) Circumvesuviana commuter train or private driver to Napoli Centrale and then fast train to Termini from there.

A critical piece of info we need? Are you going to Rome at the end of your trip to stay there for a few days? If you are only going there to fly home form Fiumicino, you don't want to be in Sorrento the night before your trip; spend the night before the flight in Rome. Termini is Rome's central train station and not Fiumicino's.

A great resource for boning up on Italian trains:

Thank you for the excellent information. Just to clarify, we do intend to travel to Rome the day before our flight from FCO. We are staying at a hotel adjacent to the airport.

Note that you can also travel with Italo on many of those routes. A good site to use is Trainline, as they show you the prices for both operators. And Italo from Venice to Florence, and then local trains to Monterosso will often be cheaper than doing all on Trenitalia.

I agree with Kathy. I used the train and bus service with my 80 year-old mother-in-law and it was easy (even not knowing the language).

Italy has an amazing train network. I've always used the trains in Italy to get everywhere - never rented a car on several trips there. (In rare cases, I've used buses.) I've been to both Venice and the Cinque Terre a few times. A few years ago, I did train from Venice to Camogli (in the riviera a bit north of Monterosso). If you book ahead you get cheaper options for the fast trains; I booked at the last minute so used regional trains which required an extra connection and probably an hour longer (but probably saved me $60).

I've been to Siena and Sorrento too. SIena I visited only as a day trip from Florence, and the direct bus easier than the train in that case (the bus drops you close to the center, the train station is further out). And once, I trained from the Cinque Terre all the way to Sorrento in a day. I took the train to Naples and there changed to the Circumvesuviana (commuter train) to get to Sorrento. It was a long day, but it all worked out fine.
