Transportation question- Amalfi conundrum

Hello,
My husband and I will be visiting Italy for the first time in a few weeks. We are flying in and out of Rome, but upon arrival, we will be heading south to visit Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. Our last scheduled stop along the coast will be Amalfi; thereafter we will head back up to Rome. I was wondering if you could offer any suggestions as to which way would be best (either fastest, cheapest, or both): 1.) head east to Salerno and take the train up to Rome (which would be going out of the way), or 2.) retrace steps, going back around the coast through Sorrento and Naples, and then take the train up to Rome.
I was also wondering if it is recommended to buy train tickets in advance.
Thanks a lot for your advice!!

brigid,
The fastest would be to take the bus from Amalfi to Salerno then train to Rome. The cost would be about the same as retracing your steps. Another option is to take the ferry to Naples then train to Rome.

Get your tickets at FCO for the trip to Naples. Get your tickets from Salerno the day before at a travel agency in Amalfi.

If the ferry were running, which I don't think it is, fastest is by ferry amalfi to salerno, then train to rome. The only ferry I am familiar with is metro del mare and they don't begin that route until late march.

Go to Salerno, either way (boat or bus)- that's much faster, and easier. You can possibly buy your train tickets from a travel agency in Amalfi- which will make it easier, because by then you'll have vetted out your travel/trip time (so you can reserve seats on the appropriate train.
