Hello!
We are staying in Tuscany at the Borgo Argenina for 3 nights. We plan to go into Florence for one day and have a wine tour scheduled at Il Poggione another day. Any recommendations for reasonable transportation for each? We do not have a car. So far we are getting quotes for private drivers of 500 euro on up to take the 6 of us up and back each time. Thanks for your help!
Have you asked Borgo Argenina what they might be able to arrange for you?
I am not surprised at the cost of a driver as they will probably commit the day to you. It is not simply a taxi ride and 6 people need a large vehicle.
You might do well to rent a car (or cars) and scout parking outside of central Florence.
With six and driver you need a van. Even a large MBenz sedan will not hold seven people. You do realize how far you are from Florence? And there is not a good direct route to Florence. You are much closer to Siena and San Gimignano. BA is kind of in the boonies. That is a good reason for 500 euro. The driver needs to get to you and, of course, the driver needs to go home. You pay for all of that.
Just out of curiosity, if you won't have a car, how do you plan to get to Borgo Argenina in the first place? Where will you be coming from? Where will you be going?
As others have mentioned, it is off the beaten path. It is also pretty far from the winery (~1.5 hours) and about the same time from Florence. By comparison, Siena is only 30 minutes away. If you are not much into museums as you pointed out elsewhere, Siena may be a viable option. It has its own charm.
If you don't have a car in Tuscany, your best bet is to stay somewhere on a bus line or near a rail line if you want to get around. BTW, a quick check shows SUV's at $60-80 a day. If you are coming from Rome, you could take the rail to Orvieto and rent a SUV there for the duration of your stay.
Rent two economy or two compact cars and you will have a car (two cars in fact).
If you don’t want to drive, then you should stay in a big town/city like Florence or Siena.
