Transportation in Rome

My husband and I will be arriving in Rome tomorrow, October 22. We are spending 10 nights in the Testaccio area and I anticipate taking a fair amount of busses and metro trips. I was looking at the one week pass and supplementing it with a 72 hour pass until I noticed a monthly pass. We depart early on November 1 so that could work and save money. Does anyone have any advice for the best plan of action? We arrive at Termini in the early afternoon tomorrow and will need to take the metro to where we are staying. Thanks for any help.

I would start with the weekly pass and then analyze what you think you’ll need next. You may be sble to ger by with just single tickets some days. We are in Testaccio and often walk to places in Transtevere or the historic district,
Where are you staying in Testaccio? Once we are hooked up to our lodging’s wifi, we use Google maps to locate which buses, trams or metroare best for where we want to go.

Andrea, I'll agree with Becky to just start with a week's pass and see if just single use BIT tickets or 48-72-hour passes would fill out your time. Central Rome really isn't all THAT huge, and we've found that we've rarely needed public transport to get from A's to B's. It is a wonderful walking city; best to explore it on foot whenever possible!

Do be aware that BITS and passes can't be used for the Leonardo Express train to/from FCO.

We never took the bus during our 13 night stay. We walked and walked and just fyi, I would watch the busses pass by and they were often packed. Could be different now that it’s a few weeks later.
We did take a couple of taxis for our bike tour etc. They aren’t very expensive.

Thanks everyone. Starting with the one week pass makes sense.

Becky, we are staying just off Lungotevere Testaccio by the Ponte Sublicio. The street is Via Romulo Gessi.

Kate, thanks for your comments. We have never been in that area before and have only spent 2 full days in Rome and that was 16 years ago. We will not be going to FCO. We did fly in there before going to Salerno at the beginning of our trip. We used the Leonardo Express to get to Termini.

Tammy, I believe where you stayed was a little more central than we will be. I read all of the reviews for the apartment we are staying in and a frequent comment was that they used the bus a lot. The closest metro station is a 15 minute walk and on the other side of the river. We will take the metro and walk the rest of the way after arriving at Termini tomorrow. If the metro seems crowded we will take a taxi. I definitely don’t want to get on a bus with luggage. We have a very early flight from Rome Ciampino when we leave and I plan to take a taxi.

Andrea, If you haven't been to Testaccio, you will love it! We took an Eating Europe food walking tour through the area, I highly recommend it. One of the places we really liked was 'Masto in Testaccio', a wine bar with wonderful food & the owner speaks great English. Hope you're having a fantastic trip!!

I second the Eating Europe Testaccio tour recommendation! We did it in March, 2023 - made the reservation the night before. It was wonderful. We only had 7 total on the tour, which made it extra special. That tour was the first time I ever did a food walking tour and now look for them wherever I go. But so far, nothing has topped that one! Our tour started mid morning and lasted until after 3pm. You will not be hungry for dinner, that's for sure.
The only thing I would say is if they offer an extra wine/prosecco package you might not need to do it. Three in our group took it, and I think they were a bit overwhelmed. There's already plenty of wine served.

I decided to get a single ticket for today that’s good for 100 minutes. That will get us to our lodgings. I don’t anticipate needing transportation the rest of today. I’ll get a one week pass that will begin whenever we first need to use the bus or metro and then figure it out from there. Thanks again for all of the advice.
