Transportation in Naples

We are trying to figure out how much a reasonable cab should cost from the Naples Airport to Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo. Can anyone suggest a reasonable cab ride that we should expect to pay? Thank you!

As Rick will tell you, although not in so many words, the cabbie will try to get at least a few more euro from you. It's the Naples way. I didn't have the foresight to print out the fare schedule, but that requires a confrontation, too.

Tim,
What was the rate you were charged? We want to make sure we are not taken advantage of.

Thanks!

Well, the confirmation email from our hotel, Palazzo Decumani, warned us that the airport-hotel rate was fixed at 20 Euros. I didn't look at the document linked above. The driver asked for 23 Euros and I decided it wasn't worth an argument. He had a smug look on his face, if I do say so myself.

I don't mean to suggest that I disliked Neapolitans! I only mean to confirm Rick's subtle way of urging readers to be on guard at all times. Indeed, at the rail station, a well-dressed old pensioner posed as a railway bureaucrat (and I received no warning from the Frecciarosa concierge just three feet away) and tried to provide "services" to me. I later saw him on the train before departure, trying to put luggage in racks for people, and so on.

Really, the worst thing that happened in Naples was that I just couldn't find some of the chapels right on Rick's map. BTW, don't count on finding the tiny, "storefront" regional TI at the railroad station, or buying any regional museum pass or travelpasses from them. There's only one person selling them, and there will be confused tourists negotiating with them for hours, in front of you in line.

Go to Google. Type in :

Taxi fare Naples Italy

And several different website entries will appear. Some calculate fare with variables of time of day/night, number of passengers, number of luggage. Some just calculate fare, but remember that all these variables do add on to the base fare for a total fare.

Just type in departure and destination points. I used the Google search engine all over Italy last year. Your hotel should have WiFi. Search for taxi fare before you call for a cab.

You should practice this now, before you leave for your trip. Get familiar and comfortable with it. Then you will have the confidence when you Google on your trip.

Check fare with driver before you get in cab. Some drivers might ask for a few Euro more over total fare. I tip that amount anyway and so would pay the asking price and move on.

The official table may not state the extra charge per baggage, or for additional people.

Zoe, you are quite right to raise the reasonable question. But, first of all, the hotel's email stated that luggage and passengers were included, and secondly, the government-provided English translation (via link posted above) says that a fixed tariff includes all supplements.

Rick's book agrees with the 20 euro taxi estimate, and the warning to be wary, but Gerri's bus suggestion is probably what most of us would do.
