Transportation in Italy

My husband will be in Italy late September.
Starting in Venice then Rome then Amalfi Coast and we end our trip in Naples

What is the best transportation getting from one city to another. It seems there are so many trains, buses, etc.

Thanks so much

There is basically one set of high speed tracks between Venice and Rome and Salerno and Naples. All the trains run on those tracks. There are 2 train operators, Trenitalia and Italotreno. Pick when you want to travel and buy tickets. Since train tickets are like airline tickets these days, pick when you want travel and buy tickets. The earlier you buy nonrefundable (or partly changeable) tickets, the lower the price will be.

You will need some buses on the Amalfi Coast to get around, and from Naples to the airport.

skm,

You might find it helpful to have a look at the RS Italy guidebook, as there's lots of good information there on "getting around". You should be able to find a copy at your local Library.

A few thoughts on the trips you'll be making.....

  • Venice to Rome - use the high speed trains as mentioned in the previous reply. These trains have compulsory seat reservations, which are specific to train, date and departure time, and you MUST use only the train listed on the ticket. Failure to do that may result in hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

  • Amalfi Coast - it's difficult to provide any suggestions without knowing where you want to go on the Amalfi coast.

  • Trip to Naples - that will also depend on where you're travelling from prior to Naples.

The best and fastest method of getting around is usually by train, however buses may be better on some routes.
