transportation in Como

We're spending a couple of days on Lake Como with a side trip to Lugano. Do we need a car to get around or is there train/bus to Lugano and is Como more of a walking town or will I want to drive to various points on the Lake?

Varenna is a much more charming town to stay in than Como, if it's not too late to change your plans. You can use Google Maps Streetview to look at the waterfront of Como. The current Streetview photos for Varenna were taken on a foggy day, so a little hard to see. You can check out some photos I took there in 2003, if you want: Varenna Sept 2003

Tom, the Como S.Giovanni train station is on a major train link between Milan and Arth-Goldau. Lugano is also on this major line. It's 35 minutes away on the Eurocity train. You can also take the S10 connecting train.
