I see that there is a bus route from Perledo to Varenna. We were hoping to rent an apartment in Vezio to take advantage of the view but will not have a car and I will be 3 months out from partial knee replacement surgery and am not sure I can manage the steep 0.7 mile hike to and from Vezio. Is there bus service from Varenna to Vezio or would we have to rely on taxis? Thanks so much for your help.

The walk up the mountain path from Varenna is very steep, you won't be able to manage it if recuperating from surgery. I went as far as the castle ruin, and it was well worth it for me. It looks like the closest bus stop is in Perledo, which still means an inclined walk to reach Vezio, along a road you don't really want to be walking on, though there may a wooded path at some point.
I imagine regular taxis will add up to quite a bit. See if this hotel can help you out with the occasional lift in to town, if you promise to eat there every so often: http://www.ristoranteilportichetto.com/ If you have your mind set on a three month stay, you may become chummy with one of your neighbours.
