Hi all,
What is the best way to take public transportation from Venice to San Viglio on a Sunday in early September? I am seeing a 4 1/2 journey via train and bus vs. 2 1/2 hours with a rental car.
Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

You have chosen a place that is not easy to reach from Venice by public transport. Trains do not run through the Dolomites, they have to go around them. Roads do go through the mountains, but the bus service to San Virgilio involves several changes. Even if you take the train to Brunico which is fairly close, it appears you have to change buses at least once.
Your simplest option might be train to Brunico and private driver for the 10-mile trip from there to San Vigilio.
Or maybe the ATVO bus from Venice to Cortina and private driver from there, but that 35-mile ride would likely be very pricey.
Here is the Venezia-Cortina bus schedule in case you want to explore the options.
Hopefully Sam has some better ideas.
Using suedtirolmobil.info/en, it is 3 hours and 52 minutes from Verona Porta Nuova. Verona is about 1 1/2 hours from Venezia S Lucia including change time in Verona. So more like 5 1/2 hours. It is a long way around. Viamichelin says it is 4 hours driving, so I don't know where 2 1/2 hours comes from.
Thanks Lola and Sam!
When I put it in Google maps, starting at the Marco Polo Airport, it says 3 hrs and 7 minutes to drive.
