Transportation from Venice to Rome - Flight or Train?

Hello! My husband and I will be visiting Italy in early May, flying from Boston into Venice. After arriving in Venice, we're planning to either take the train (about 3 hrs. 30 min) or Alitalia flight (1 hr.) from Venice to Rome. We would prefer the flight since it's shorter and will get us to Rome faster, but we are afraid the timing may be too tight. Our flight arrives at 10:45 a.m. and the flight from Venice to Rome leaves 12:10 p.m. Since we'll need to get through customs, get our bags, recheck our bags and go through security, it seems like this may be unrealistic, but wanted to see if anyone could share their experience at the Marco Polo airport with customs, collecting bags and security. Thank you!

I'm left wondering why you're flying into Venice and not visiting there on this end of the trip. Venice is not usually the cheapest or default airport choice. And on an airline that doesn't code-share with Alitalia? It's a small airport, but I would not book that 12:10 flight unless it were an official connection with bags checked through. Alitalia offers later flights that are a better bet.

Most days show a 2:25 flight.
This would be a much better fit with your arrival schedule.

Edit. Flight time. You will still beat the train, and it will be less expensive.

Edit. You have not included the time it takes by bus to arrive at the train station nor the wait time between arrival there and the time the train departs.

If you fly to Venice, start your vacation there. If you are not interested, fly to Rome instead of Venice. If you have to go through immigration, collect baggage, customs, recheck baggage, security - my educated guess is that 1 hour 25 minutes is not enough and you will miss your plane.

Lyndsay,

I have the same question as Laura. In any case, my preference in that situation would (as usual) be to take the train.

Using the previous reply as an example, if you took a 1 hour flight departing Venice at 14:25 (after waiting 3H:40M in a jet lagged state), then the baggage collection routine at FCO and finally the Leonardo Express or Taxi into Rome, you'd likely already be there if you had taken the train. That option would be an all-day ordeal. The train will take you right to Termini, you'd have some time for a short rest and something to eat, wouldn't have to worry about restrictive or costly baggage charges and it would be a more relaxing and pleasant trip.

For planning purposes, a train ticket purchased on the day of travel will likely cost €86 per person in standard class. Booking an advance-discount train ticket opens the issue of being unusable if you miss the scheduled train (same as for most air tickets).

Thank you all for your help! I think we'll be opting for the train.

Laura and Ken, to answer your question, we will also be spending some time in Venice. We found an amazing mistake fare on United that's round trip from Boston to Venice, so we're flying into that airport and traveling to Rome to start our trip, then heading to Sorrento and finally capping off our trip with a few days in Venice before our return flight.

Lyndsay,

Thanks for the clarification on that. It all makes perfect sense now. I assume you're aware of the transportation options from Rome to Sorrento?

Is your flight home from Venice at some pretty early hour?
