Arriving at the Venice airport and heading to our rental in Cannaregio.
This is our first trip to Venice and not sure the best way to travel from the
airport to Cannaregio?
ok, I'll ask.... where in Cannaregio? and what time of day? and how many is "our"? and any walking or other mobility concerns?
is "best" = cheapest or best = fastest or best = most iconic? (hint- you can't have all three)
And how much luggage?
light luggage,
arriving 11am, mid October
2 adults,
no mobility issues,
we do not have the address as yet,
lower cost is always nice, without major compromise
good to know the from to: higher cost and time/vs/lower cost and time
Ca d"Oro Vaporetto dock
When you get an address, let us know. It might be the Alilaguna "A" boat or the "B" boat, or a bus to Piazzale Roma and then the No 1 vaporetto. Best transport depends on the destination, and Cannaregio is a good sized chunk of Venice.
was going to say pretty much what Sam said....
Otherwise we are throwing darts blindfolded.
Regardless of the exact location of your rental in Venice, there are 3 ways to get there from the airport.
The 1st is a water taxi and it is the most expensive. Probably 125 Euros for the boat. But if you can join up with another couple or two it might be worth the cost. In addition, there is now a shared water taxi service but we've not used it and can't provide any details about it.
The 2nd and next least expensive is the Alilaguna boat. It will cost about 20 Euros per person. It takes longer, you do have to "check" you baggage so you don't have control of it the entire time, and you probably will not be able to get a "non stop" line to the area of your hotel.
The 3rd and least expensive is a combination bus and vaporetto (vap.). It takes a bit longer, but that is what we do because we travel very light with just one carry on apiece. There are two bus lines that serve the airport. One is ATVO and is NOT affiliated with the vap. system. The other is ACTV and IS affiliated with the vap. system. At the airport you can get a vap. pass for various periods from 24 to 72 (or more?) hours. You can have a one way or two way bus fare added to the vap. pass. There is a good site maintained by the ACTV system that has current prices and etc.. Don't remember the url so just Google it.
If you decide on option # 3, take the # 5 ACTC bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Be sure and validate the vap. pass on the bus. Do not wait until you get on the vap. Also, validate the pass each time you use the vap. Then take to the vap. to the stop closest to your hotel. We've done option # 3 many times. Easy Peasy and cheap to boot.
Only you can decide which is best for you. Since the exact location isn't known at this time, it's not possible to give more specific advice.
There is a site called veniceforvisitors.com that has a lot of good info. that you might want to check out .
A quick look at this map shows how spread out the Cannaregio neighborhood is:

The closest dock is Ca d"Oro Vaporetto.
Then the bus to the No 1 vaporetto is best. The combined bus-vaporetto ticket is 14 EUR per person. If you plan on getting a vaporetto pass for your stay, you can buy a pass with added airport bus for 6 EUR additional to the pass price.
