Transportation from Sicily to Malta-end of August 2021

I'm toying around with something and just wanted to make sure I have all my options straight.

At the end of August, I'm considering flying to Sicily and then needing to get to Malta. I would to pay for my transportation to Malta, the day of travel.

I'm seeing that I could fly with RyanAir or Alitalia for a pretty reasonable price. I'm also seeing that there is a ferry, I'm looking at the company, Virtu, but I can't get their website to be agreeable. It does seem that flying could be a fair amount cheaper.

Just take a 40 minute flight from Catania Airport (I used Air Malta - be aware that flights may not occur every day of the week). It's a pain logistically to get all the way down south to Pozzalo (nothing around there, it's at the southern point of Sicily) and then have to time the ferry schedule, which is limited. Something must be off with your browser since the ferry site seems to work (I tried a dummy booking): https://www.virtuferries.com

I did this in 2019. When I looked into it, it was cheaper, faster, and easier to fly (getting to ferry town, schedules).

Agnes, flight makes sense. What browser are you using out of curiosity? I use firefox.

The ferry company have transfer coaches between Pozzalo and Catania. Using them is hardly what I would call a pain logistically.

I use Safari and Firefox (remember to put in the number & type of passengers, or nothing will happen afterward). I'm talking about "total time" when I said "pain logistically". A flight was 40 minutes or so, and I enjoyed the view. I'm not a fan of the environmental effects of flying using very short flights and I know it's selfish, but my time was very limited (I'm not retired and combined Sicily and Malta on one trip).

I bought my flight tickets ahead of time, not same day. It would be more expensive otherwise, and I knew my schedule beforehand.

Jules, the website is working on my PC with both Edge and Chrome. PM me if you want me to do a search for you.

Thanks, Agnes, I will give it another try. I emailed them yesterday and they said their system was overloaded and was crashing. Today, I am putting in the # of passengers, I can't get it to take dates. I may try a different browser

I believe it. The website actually says that. And it was very slooooow loading. Actually, you should compare the costs and time of both options - maybe you'll find the ferry option to be preferable. I'm sure it works well for many people or they wouldn't have such high demand. Perhaps the flights are totally unpredictable (cancellations, time changes, etc) and perhaps a ferry is more reliable right now. Something to consider.

No bought air tickets before I left for Europe. Used Google flights, sky scanner, etc. to compare costs. I think I went with Ryan air and it was $50 ish with another $25 for the checked bag. There were cheaper flights--in the $25 area but they left Catania at 5:30 or 6 in the morning. I waited till 9:00 instead of rushing around in the dark.

Just remember that a 40 minute flight is not 40 min total travel time. Also keep in mind that the time spent on the ferry can be used in a way that is not possible on a plane.
