Transportation from Salerno to Pompei

We are dropping a rental car off at Budget Car in Salerno. The plan is to go then to Pompei, drop our luggage off at our hotel, and then tour the ruins. We fly out of Naples the next day at 12 noon.
What is the best way to get to Pompeii from Salerno? Are taxis easy to find there? The train schedules are confusing as Trentslia does not seem to service this route.
Thank you in advance!

What town is the hotel in? Modern Pompeii city? Is it one night, before flying home? Or do you mean to drop the luggage off in Salerno before a stay there? It is not without risk to wake up in Salerno and fly home at Noon from Naples. Are you boarding the same flight that will go to the USA? In that case, you have to be there at 9AM.

A taxi from Salerno to Pompeii would probably be 100 Euros or more. Most people would take the Trenitalia train to modern Pompeii city and take a short taxi ride to the ancient site of Pompeii Scavi. BTW, you can also take that train to Naples, but you'd still need a $25 (?) fixed-rate taxi to the Airport.

I take it there is no car agency office near your hotel for the car drop-off night.

A more 'exciting' journey would be the Trenitalia from Salerno to Napoli Centrale station. Then walk downstairs and catch the Circumvesuviana commuter train another 40 minutes to the Pompei Scavi entrance. The 'CV' is---if it can be imagined---the New York subway but with Italian itinerant beggars that entertain you, sometimes with bongos and out-of-tune accordions that look and sound like the train has already run them over. A passenger can ignore them, admonish them, or give them a couple Euro and hope they go away. They aren't dangerous but a CV trip is dirt cheap and usually a good story to tell upon returning home. Both legs are probably not more than 20 Euro total.

Does anyone know about ‘Italiarail Trains’? It looks like it is a 45 minutes long trip, but not very clear.

Why not turn the car in at Naples , drop your luggage at a hotel there, and take the train to/from Pompeii?

Solves the problem of getting from Salerno to Pompeii and staying in Naples the night before the flight simplifies your departure.

We have a hotel reservation already in Pompei and we do not want to drive in Naples.

simple train from Salerno to Pompei (the modern town).

But you plan confuses me. Go to Salerno, go to Budget, check the car back in and get the inspection, go to Salerno station, train to Pompei, walk or taxi to hotel to drop luggage, taxi or walk to the same or different entrance to the dig, ancient Pompeii, visit, back to hotel, then taxi or Circumvesuviana to the airport or Naples station then taxi, early in the day?

Is that correct?

Yes, that is the plan. We would take a taxi or hotel bus to Naples Airport the next day from Pompeii.
