Transportation from Salerno to Florence to Rome

Hello, my adult son & I will be traveling to Italy in October and we'll be driving from Rome to Salerno on day of arrival. After a few days on the Malfi coast, we would like to visit other regions by train. Which train(s) do you recommend for the schedule below? Is it necessary to take regional trains, then connect with Eurostar train? We'd like to get to each destination sooner than later :). Arrive in Rome 10/5 (will be driving to Salerno) Salerno 10/5,6,7 Florence 10/8,9,10,11 Pompeii 10/12,13 (Naples?) Rome 10/14,15
Depart Rome 10/16

Sandy, I'll be staying in Salerno in a few weeks and then moving on to Florence via high speed train. Check the Trenitalia and Italo websites to see which offers the best schedule and price. I did a quick search and I found a 29 Euro train on Trenitalia leaving at 7:15 and arriving in Florence at 10:30. That's 10 Euro cheaper than what I paid. Italo's price is comparable and gets to Florence a few minutes earlier. For getting to Pompeii, book a fast train from Florence to Naples (~3 hours) and then you can buy a ticket for the commuter train to Pompeii (~30 minutes) once in Naples. BTW are you returning the car in Salerno or going back to Salerno to pick up the car and drop off in Rome?

From Salerno to Florence then back to Pompeii? then back to Rome? That's going back and forth from north to south multiple times. I would do: (not sure why you want Salerno or why you need a car, but I'll leave that to you). Oct 5: arrive Rome drive to Amalfi Coast. Nights of October 5, 6, 7, 8: Sleep in Gulf of Naples area (Amalfi coast). Visit Pompeii, Naples, Capri, while in the area. Oct 9 morn: return car in Salerno (or Naples). Take train to Florence. Nights of Oct 9, 10, 11, 12: Sleep in Florence (day trip to Siena, by bus, or other towns during Florence stay) Morn of Oct. 13: Go to Rome by train Nights of Oct 13, 14, 15: Sleep in Rome Morn of Oct 16: depart to US You can add or subtract nights to whichever place you wish (for example you may want more time in Rome and less in Florence or Naples area). Another option is to fly to Florence and work your way south. Then return to the US from either Naples (via EU hub) or from Rome. For example: Arrive Florence (stay in Florence a few days) Train to Rome (stay in rome a few days) Train (or car if you need one in the area) to Naples/Amalfi area
fly out of Naples. Or, same as above, but from Florence you go all the way to Naples area. Then you come back to Rome which you leave for last. From rome you fly back to the US.
