Transportation from Rome to Sorrento - Bus or Train/ferry

I will be going from Rome to Sorrento this fall and evaluating which will be the least hectic transportation to get there. from review RS Italy, my first option is to take the bus from the Tiburtina Station to Sorrento and the second will be take the train from Rome to Naples and then ferry to Sorrento. Train looks faster but with transferring to ferry is much time really saved. Suggestions appreciated

Can only tell you about train. From Rome via fast train I think little less than hour and half, then you can get local train from same station in Naples to Sorrento, about an hour. I seem to remember fast train 44 euro, slow train 22 euro one way. Local train about 5 euro one way to Sorrento and takes an hour. (Slow train from Rome about 2 hours or two hours and fifteen minutes). If you take ferry, you need to factor how long it will take to get from Naples train station to ferry and how to do that and then time on the ferry and from ferry to where you are staying in Sorrento. Nice thing about the train is that it seems to drop you off in middle of Sorrento.

The Circumvesuviana light rail connecting Napoli Centrale to Sorrento takes an hour because it makes something like 30 stops along the way. I've never enjoyed riding it. But it works. It's downstairs in the train station so the transfer is easy, the trains are frequent and the Sorrento stop is on the middle of town.

Yes have to agree with the last poster that you don't enjoy the train but it is easy to access in Naples and drops you right into Sorrento. At least you are going in Fall so it won't be as hot. I have taken the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Naples for a daytrip. The ride was empty and quick but unfortunately raining. We walked to the Museum which was great but ran out of time and had to take a taxi back to the port. The taxi was not a nice ride. Arriving in Sorrento you will have to take the bus from the port up the rather steep hill as you have luggage. You may want to check the ferry schedule for Fall in case there are seasonal cutbacks.

I've considered this very carefully myself, and for the least hectic transportation, my family will be taking the Marozzi bus from Tiburtina station in Rome all the way to Positano (beyond Sorrento) in a month. I believe it's only 3 - 3/12 hours to Sorrento. I've heard good things about the ride. I had a hard time figuring out their website; but finally got it figured out. If you decide to purchase tickets on-line, I can help. It's about 20 euro one way per person.
