transportation from Rome to Sorrento

My family of 6, including my 75 yo parents and 11 yo niece, will need to get to Sorrento from Rome. I've been given a cost of 75 euro per person for a private car from Rome to our place in Sorrento. Any idea what approximate cost would be to travel by train? I like the idea of the car for ease and safety with my parents and niece but don't want to pay ridiculous amounts of money for it either. Advice?
Thank you for your help!

Lynn--

I checked on Trenitalia and non-stop train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale--70 minutes--arbitrarily for next week is 28 Euro per. Then you'd have to take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento station, no more than 10 Euro per. 38 x 6 people is 228 Euro. And then you may or may not be within walking distance from there to your hotel. If you're down at the marina in Sorrento, another taxi or bus.

Let's look at this. With two 75-year old parents, I would not recommend the Circumvesuviana part of this. And unless you can find a more reasonable price (yes, 450 Euro appears somewhat out of line, but maybe not) for private transport, I would take the train to Napoli Centrale, then have private transport take you to Sorrento from there. For 2 people, we paid 95 Euro--bottom line is they know they got you, so they can charge it. A van for six people may cost you 125-150 Euro. All of a sudden, what do you know, you're at 350-375 Euro.

If you are not packing like Diana Ross (meaning pack light!) the train to Naples should be fine for everyone if that's the way you want to go. But if it's only a matter of 50-75 Euro difference, with senior citizens and a child, I would consider biting the bullet and paying the shot from Rome. Definitely check around for transport from Naples to Sorrento.

Thank you so much Jay. Just making sure my math is accurate. I'm pretty new to international travel so making sure I'm making the wisest choices! I really appreciate your help!

The least expensive train option is advance purchase high-speed train from Rome to Naples and Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Cost could be as low as 120 euro for 6 people with Super Economy tickets. The cost increases to around 300 euro if high-speed train tickets are purchased day of travel. You can explore schedules and pricing on the Trenitalia and Italo websites. Circumversuviana trains run about twice hourly.

Other options to consider are high-speed train to Naples and then either private transfer or Campania Express train to Sorrento. I'm not sure of the cost of a private transfer for 6 people, but it would be at least 100 euro. The Campania Express train only runs seasonally and only 4 times a day, and it would add about 30 euro to the cost of travel between Naples and Sorrento, so maybe as low as 150 euro with advance purchase high-speed train tickets.

You know, the train would definitely be an adventure for all concerned, probably something you all talk about when you get home. But it requires more changes--your place in Rome to Termini, Sorrento station to your hotel, it just adds up and unless your folks are really spry & up for anything....uh uh.

If it were just you and your husband, the whole train thing's a no-brainer.

But also consider that you'll need to travel from Sorrento to your next destination, which will add to the overall cost. Where are you going next, and what time of the year will you be traveling? How much luggage per person?

Editing to add: what day of the week do you need to make this transfer? I'm asking because there is a direct coach bus or two (Marozzi and Flixbus) from Roma Tiburtina to Sorrento but with limited runs. Still, they only cost 19.00 € pp or so, and would only require a change of transport when you arrive in Sorrento, depending on where your accommodations are. This option would depend on time/day of the week you need to travel.

And one last question (sorry for all of these but more info helps!), are you needing to get to Sorrento the same day as an international flight into Rome?

We'll be finishing up a tour in Rome on a Saturday in July and need to make our way to Sorrento for 4-5 days. From there we'll just need transportation to the airport to fly home. I'm stressing to everyone to PACK LIGHT! So hopefully just carryon bags for all. I will certainly check into your suggestions - thank you!

Which airport? Fiumicino or Naples, and departure time if you've already booked it?

per person????? I did 5 people from Sorrento to Naples for 75 euro. NOT per person. I had my hotel in Sorrento make the arrangements - in fact, they did it for 2 years prior and will do it again this year. I suggest keep looking - and get someone to help you so you won't get taken.

There is also a direct bus from Rome to Sorrento. Only runs a couple of times per day but it is handy and since you are coming off a tour and not an international flight that could be your easiest option. Getting to your departure airport could be a bigger problem depending on departure time.

Those are the Marozzi and Flixbuses I mentioned earlier.
