Transportation from rome airport to hotel (rome cavalieri)

We are trying to decide whether it is better to hire a shuttle from the airport to the hotel or take the train/bus. Does anyone know how much the train from the airport to Termini station is? Do we have to pay again to take the metro to Barberini? Any advice on a reliable shuttle service?

jdy,

The Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini is €14 PP and the trip is about 35 minutes. DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train, or you may face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! Yes, AFAIK you'd have to pay for the Metro to Barberini, but it's very cheap (probably not the option I'd choose when hauling luggage). You could also take the train to Termini and then Taxi to your hotel (that's a method I often use). If you walk out the front doors of the station (straight ahead with your back to the tracks), you'll find the Taxi ranks and there will be lots of them waiting.

As I usually travel solo, I've never used a Taxi from the airport, but I believe they have a fixed rate into Rome. There are details in the Guidebook.

Because you mention that you're headed to the Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts... which sits outside Rome... I would not take the Leonardo Express. Rather, I'd just take a taxi. The hotel sits on the NW side of town and thus it would take far less time to ride in a taxi - and probably end up costing you about the same money, depending on how many folks are in your group. This hotels sits outside the fixed-rate taxi zone, so depending on time of day... you might be looking at 50-55 EUR in taxi fees. Good Luck!

It's not really outside Rome, it's outside the city center, at Monte Mario. Definitely better to take a taxi directly from the airport, as Ron suggested.
Very posh accommodations and gorgeous views, but not exactly walking distance from anything. You'll have to rely on taxis a lot, even the bus doesn't stop exactly in front. They have a Ferrari car rental though.

While technically still in Rome it takes a half hour for the shuttle to get from Piazza Barberini to the hotel, which is why most people consider it outside of Rome. I always arrange a private transfer when I stay at the Cavalieri. I use www.romecabs.com or airportshuttlelimousine. If you have the hotel arrange a transfer they will over charge you for it.

As for taking the train and then the bus, you can certainly do that, but it would mean transfering from train to metro to bus, all after a very long flight. Save yourself the aggravation and take a private transfer.

I miss the Roma Cavalieri - fantastic pool and spa. I had a friend who worked there and sometimes he could get us pool/spa day-pass privileges years ago. A wonderful place to spend a hot afternoon in Rome (perhaps more so when you're living there in August and you don't have AC - LOL!)

We lived on Via Candia and Via Cassia... so the Cavalieri was about smack in the middle of both locations. It's a great hotel and often folks use this as a drop-off spot for their rental cars. When coming from outside Rome... Europcar, Hertz, and Avis all have drop-off desks here. Thus, you can avoid having to drive into the city center. It is a little tricky to find for first-time visitors (well, it was for us!) ... so study your map if driving.

If you book a room in this hotel, do pay extra for the CITY-View. The backside of the hotel faces a huge TV tower and apartment buildings, so quite a contrast in views! I learned this the hard way many, many years ago. The view of Rome is well worth the investment.

Also, look at the fine print of your reservation. Pool and Spa options cost extra for some entry level rooms and many 3rd party vendors. And those pool/spa passes can run almost 20 EUR per person PER DAY! So you can see the pool, but you might not be able to use it. That won't sit well with your kids!

If you book a room class like the Imperial level and above, the pool and spa are built into the daily rate. Again, I found this out the hard way on my first visit 10+ years ago. If you only plan to use the pool/spa one day.. then just take the lower entry-level room daily rate and buy a day-pass!

If you're using points, this hotel has one of the HIGHEST point redemption requirements in the HHonors system. Standard rooms start at 80,000 points per night (although they do run point "promos")... and Suites can run over 330,000 points per night. That's a lot of stays in multiple Hampton Inns.

If you don't mind the shuttle or taxi ride into town (you can't walk from here), and you want the pool/spa... it's a great place to stay!

And if you book a "top" suite (a Napoleon, Petronius, Planetarium or Penthouse suite), there are Virtuoso amenities that include one complimentary saloon-car transfer to/from Rome Cavalieri to/from any of the airports or three main train stations... Their saloon-car is currently a Rolls-Royce, I believe. At those suite rates, they should throw in the ride!
