Hi all. This May four adults will travel from Positano to Pompeii. Instead of hiring a car service (to save some money) from Positano to Naples with a 2-3 hour stop in Pompeii, we decided to continue on from Pompeii on the train to Naples. Then we catch another train to Rome. The issues that come up are dealing with luggage at Pompeii and train service on the circumveccia. I’ve been told that I can safely secure luggage for all of us at Pompeii but I’m not sure I want to trust that. Also, just this week the trains experienced a derailment and there is a bus service between the problem areas. Should I be worried about these issues or just chill out and relax. Thanks so much. Dale
Have you read a review by somebody who left his luggage at Pompeii and regretted it?
I see no reason trust the site's employees less (or more) than those working in the train stations all over Europe. Anyway it's your choice between the left luggage located inside the station and the one at the site entrance. Pick the place that makes you feel more comfortable.
As Dario stated above, you can check luggage (deposito bagagli) either at the Circumvesuviana train station (fee) or at the excavation itself (free). I've never heard of anyone having an issue.
The excavations office used to warn that their cloakroom storage can fill up early so I'd try to stow your bags at the station, even though I'm not seeing that caution now.

If you are catching a 'fast' train to Rome in Naples, just give yourself plenty of time to get there from the scavi in case of a delay.
The Circumvesuviana commuter train between Pompeii and Naples can be hot and dumpy. And there are often pickpockets that prey on tourists with luggage. A better option is to take the Campania Express, which is a train for tourists running on the same track. It only runs four times a day, but it's safer, has air-conditioning, and room for luggage. Another option would be to take a taxi from the ruins to the Pompei (city name only has one "i") train station and then the regular train from there to Naples.
