We are trying to decide on what to do our last day before departing on a 8:00pm flight. Ostia Antica seems like a good choice because of its proximity to the airport. What are my choices of transportation from OA to FCO? On a side note, is their a place to store carry -on luggage when visiting the ruins?
I think you're going to find that it's a surprising hassle to do what you're asking. I suggest staying in Rome your last day, and do Ostia as a daytrip some earlier day. Then you don't have to worry about luggage, calling a cab, etc. Happy travels.
They are relatively close. A taxi would be your best option. I do not know of any luggage storage on site.
When I visited OA I was staying at the Airport Hilton for an early next day departure. I had the Hilton desk call a cab for me. It's about 10-15 minutes to OA. I did not speak enough Italian to deal with calling the dispatchers, so I when I was finished at OA I called the Hilton and they called a cab for me; he arrived in less than 15 minutes. I see two problems. What do you do with your luggage at OA? The ticket booth is tiny and I saw nothing in the cafeteria for luggage storage, but I wasn't looking for any. Even if you could store your luggage, how would you call a cab (assuming no fluency in Italian)? I suppose that you could ask one of the close-by restaurants to call you one, maybe even to store your luggage after eating there, but that would be for me too much of a risk.
Even if you could store your luggage at the cafeteria, you'd have to haul it all the way there, as the cafeteria is way past the front gate.
I was checking out google maps when I noticed how close OA was to the airport, but I do not want a hassle or run into any problems trying to get to the airport. I will rethink our plans.
