transportation from Naples to Sorrento

I looked at these wesites and quoted them from Ricks book. I thought what a great way to get to our hotel and see the coastline for some great photos. However when I went there they were all in Italian so I couldn't understand them or they did go to Sorrento. So are there any other places I can go to get a water taxi from Naples to Sorrento? We arrive in from Rome at the Napoli Centrale train station. I honestly have tried to google ANY transportation and did not even find anything except a shuttle service from the airport that goes to Sorrento. Any insights or tips would be great from anyone on the helpline. What am I missing here?? TIA Mike "By Boat: Several ferry companies service the Naples, Sorrento, and Amalfi Coast areas. While these can change from year to year, major companies include Caremar (www.caremar.it), SNAV (www.snav.it), Gescab (a.k.a. NLG Jet, www.gescab.it), Metrò del Mare (www.metrodelmare.net), and Alilauro (www.alilauro.it)."

Go to Molo Beverello (Beverello Pier) by taxi or bus from the station and take a boat with whichever company you wish.

Mike, What time of year will you be travelling? That trip is fairly straight forward. You'll first need to get from Napoli Centrale to Molo Beverello (dock), and Taxi is probably the easiest method. Be sure to read the "caveats" regarding Taxi's in Naples in the Guidebook. This website should provide the information you'll need: www.sorrento-online.com/english/orari.htm There are links for two services but it looks like they're only in Italian. Using Alilauro as an example, the appear to have departures about every two hours, trips is about 40 minutes and adult fare is €12.30 PP. When you buy tickets, specify Adulto sola andata (adult, one way only). I'm sure Roberto or one of the others will be able to add a bit more detail. Happy travels!

Are you set on going to Sorrento by boat? We went there on our last trip and found that it was fairly simple to catch the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale train station. This train is cheaper than a boat, and in some cases a quicker alternative. The train to Sorrento runs about every half hour during peak hours and the entire trip takes just a little over an hour. All you need to do if buy a Unico Campania ticket at the Central Station. Very easy! Single journey fares are about 4.10 Euro for a Unico 5 ticket to Sorrento.

The Circumvesuviana is faster, but you mention photo ops, which you won't have from the train. If you are going to the Amalfi Coast, you can take the bus from Sorrento down the coast (sit on the right-hand side) and then take the ferry back to Sorrento or Naples for two different types of views, both spectacular.

Services between Sorrento - Capri and Sorrento - Naples run year round weather permitting. One of the times we visit Sorrento each year is at the back end of Oct and during the two weeks of our visits there have been at least one or two days when sea crossings have been suspended due to choppy seas. So if you do decide to cross by sea from Naples have a Plan B ready. In addition to public transport you can hire a Sorrento based private door to door car service, should cost about 70 - 80 euro. Another thing to think about is, can you walk to your hotel from the Marina (there is a public elevator up to the town) or from the railway station? If not you have to add in the time/cost of getting to your hotel. Taxis in Sorrento are very expensive. Although actual dates vary from year to year we find that the boat services from Sorrento around to the Amalfi Coast usually finish by the third week in October. PS You dont get to see that much from the Naples - Sorrento hydrofoil as the seating is inside and the windows can get a bit mucky with seaspray.

Agree with Linda. After 2 nights in Sorrento we took hydrofoil to Capri for 3 nights then hydrofoil to Naples for trip home. We could just look through windows, our hydrofoil had no place to sit outside. Our bed and breakfast in Sorrento had recommended the "fast ferry" from Sorrento to Capri, maybe that is why.
It is a lot of walking to the ferries in Sorrento, especially with suitcases. Easier in Naples to get off and get a cab.
