Transportation from Naples Airport to hotel in Pompei

We are interested in securing transportation from Naples airport to our hotel in Pompei. Would like to arrange it before we go if possible. Any advice on service and cost? Thank you. Joan

Joan,

Just curious on why you're staying in Pompeii and not Sorrento?

Some transportation options you could consider.....

  • Curreri Viaggi Bus from NAP to Sorrento, and then Circumvesuviana or Taxi to Pompeii.
  • Taxi from NAP to Napoli Centrale, where you can connect with the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii.
  • Pre-arranged private transfer from NAP to your hotel in Pompeii. Check the guidebook for firms that offer this service. The Monetti Taxi is highly recommended as I recall.

I don't know about private services available but a budget option is the Alibus from the airport (3 Euro pp, runs every 20 min) to the central train station, then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. If you'll be in the area for a few days, you might want to look at the Unico Campania Artecard - there is an option which covers all public transportation in Campania including Ischia for 3 days. When we were there last year, it also covered admission to 2 sights, including Pompeii & Herculaneum, with discounts on additional sights & cost was ~ 28 euro pp. The Unico Campania website has information but I can't link to the current fares for some reason. We purchased our cards in the train station.

If you take the bus, I suggest you use Google Maps, both on the C. Viaggi site, where they nicely show the exact bus route, and for Pompeii, to be sure the stop is near enough to your hotel. The point is that "Pompeii" and "Pompeii Scavi" are different places. Pompeii is also a modern city.

It appears to me that the bus stop is at Pompeii Villa Misteri, which is a less-busy gate to the excavations. "Pompeii Scavi" usually means the very, very busy Porta Marina entrance to the excavations, and a train stop. Because we entered the excavations at the latter gate, and exited at Villa Misteri, I can tell you that the two are readily walkable, but maybe not so easy with luggage. On that walk, we passed one, attractive but isolated hotel.

The other thing to keep in mind in your planning is that the commuter train, the Circumvesuviana line, serves Pompeii Scavi, while the long-distance train line, from, say, Naples to Salerno, serves the modern city of Pompeii.
